Since Tim Baskerville asked to use one of my photographs (taken at his recent Mare Island Night Photography workshop) on The Nocturnes web site, I see that I have been getting some new visitors from the link.
Thanks for visiting. (And thanks to Tim for the link!)
I’m new to night photography, but I am very intrigued by the possibilities. I’ve posted a few of my Night photographs here, but plan to add many more in the future.

G Dan Mitchell is a California photographer and visual opportunist. His book, “California’s Fall Color: A Photographer’s Guide to Autumn in the Sierra” (Heyday Books) is available directly from him.
The story: This boulders sits in the Merced River in lower Yosemite Valley, right alongside the road into the park. I have no doubt it has been photographed thousands (and thousands and thousands… ) of times. I had originally done a color version since the bright yellow of the autumn leaves on the far bank was part of what attracted me to the scene. The original also was cropped differently – it was also in the vertical format but included more of the river in the foreground.
After seeing someone else’s photograph of this same rock last week it occurred to me to go back and work with the image some more. The end result is this monochrome version in which I cropped out a good portion of the foreground to get what I think is a more effective composition.
