Note to G Dan Mitchell Website Subscribers

I am consolidating some services on my G Dan Mitchell Photography website. Some people have been subscribing to email announcements from the site using a legacy wordpress “subscriber” system. I am eliminating this older option.

If you stop receiving site emails as a result, there is an easy solution! When you visit the home page you should see a large floating SUBSCRIBE Botton, likely at the bottom left of the page. Use it to re-subscribe using the current system. (You can also find the Subscribe feature near the bottom of every individual page on the website.)

Thanks for being a subscriber!

Lots of Posts!

Last week I had a reason to look into how many posts and photos have appeared here since I started this website on July 20, 2005. The answer surprised me: Nearly 8,200 posts/articles and more than 6500 images!

And it looks like the site will celebrate the start of its third decade this coming summer!

Where Are the New Autumn Aspen Photos?

If you have followed me here or on social media for a while you know that I’m passionate about photographing fall color in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. I usually spend a lot of time up there during the first two or three weeks of October when the colors peak.

But I don’t have any new Sierra fall color photos to share this year. I thought I should explain why.

Something felt “off” back in June after we returned from our UK trip and Great Glen Way trek. I chalked it up to lingering effects from a probable covid infection. But eventually the issue become more serious and it became clear that I was having a heart problem, and by late August it was interfering with my activities.

Symptoms became serious enough at the beginning of September that I made an emergency room visit. After hours of observation and testing showed rather high blood pressure but otherwise normal results, I was sent home. A few days later I had additional heart tests, which were also encouraging — no structural heart abnormalities. A heart rhythm issue was discovered, but it doesn’t look serious and it should be treatable.

Blood pressure medication (that I probably should have started much earlier) was prescribed, and it is having a positive effect. My symptoms are greatly diminished and continuing to improve as we work out the best treatment plan. I’m very encouraged, and it looks like my activities won’t be seriously impaired going forward. (Though I am a little peeved that my doctor told me to eliminate coffee and alcohol for now! ;-) )

Even though my doctor said it would be OK, I felt that spending time at high elevations while still having disturbing heart symptoms would not be wise. So I’ve been hanging out here at sea level… and fortunately there’s a very scenic coastline nearby!

On one hand, I really miss being up in the mountains as the seasons change, and I think about it all the time. On the other hand, I’m grateful that I’m getting treatment, and that I should be able to get back up there in the future!

Blog News

This morning I am sharing a bit a news about this blog — a sort of “heads up,” if you will. During recent weeks we’ve been busily preparing for this summer’s main travel event. We’ve lined up house-sitters who will live here and take care of the place while we’re away, finalized plans and itineraries and reservations, started packing, and more.

At times I won’t be able to update the blog every day. On other occasions you may see a new photograph but not the usual descriptive text. Long-time followers probably know that I’ve shared a daily photograph here since the early 2000s without a break. (I think I’m coming up on twenty years soon!) I don’t want to break that streak!

In order to keep things running — and the content flowing — I’ve been working to pre-load a lot of material. If things go as planned you should continue to see new daily content.

What will that content be? Some of it will be photographs that I made earlier — the work is new here, but less recent. Some comes from as recently as June, but some may be from earlier this year.

Because our travels will take me away from the usual Sierra Nevada and California sites, you won’t be seeing as much of “the usual” here. (Watch for new Sierra work in late summer and fall.) However, I’m hoping to share at least some new work from our travels, perhaps along with some stories about it. I can’t predict what that it be just yet, but keep watching! You may enjoy some surprises!
