A Note on Current Photographs

Recently I posted a string of photographs from a recent trip to the Seattle area, some of which were different aesthetically and technically from what I usually do. I’ve pretty much gone through the images from that trip now, and over the next week or so you will see more photographs from my early August week-long backpacking trip in the southern Sierra Nevada.

My friends and I entered the back-country near Cottonwood Lakes from Horseshoe Meadow, crossed New Army and Crabtree passes to get into the Kern River basin west of Mt. Whitney, wandered up a section of the John Muir Trail, and then travelled east over Shepherd Pass to leave the Sierra.

Photographically, it was a tough trip, for a few reasons. Two weeks earlier I had backpacked into the Ansel Adams wilderness near the Minarets and Mounts Ritter and Banner, staying several days at Ediza Lake and then at Thousand Island Lake. On that trip, the conditions were ideal for mountain photography: beautiful clouds building to afternoon thundershowers, wildflowers still blooming, meadows green, and so forth. The southern Sierra trip was a whole different beast. First, the terrain was much higher and more austere – we often spent significant time at or above timberline. In addition, we travelled every day, often walking through very impressive and high terrain during the middle of the day – a hard time to photograph this kind of country – and ending up quite tired in the evenings. The extraordinary drought conditions in the southern Sierra this year also made certain areas a bit less photogenic than they might normally be, especially since the sky was completely cloudless during the whole trip.

So it goes. When conditions are wonderful – as they were on the earlier trip – I consider myself to be very lucky and I shoot as much as I can. When things are less conducive to photography, I still shoot quite a bit but I also may focus a bit more on the enjoyment of the trip itself.

In any case, watch for some photographs from this true high Sierra trip over the next few days.

A Note About Upcoming Photographs

Over the next week or so I’m going to post some photographs that are quite unlike the stuff I typically post here.

It is probably accurate to say that the majority of my photographs are landscape-orientated – even many of the urban photographs are essentially “urban landscapes.” In addition, while I do post-process my photographs in Photoshop, the goal is usually to modify the photo so that it more accurately captures the emotional quality of the original scene.

Last week I spent a few days in Seattle, one of my favorite places to photograph. For some reason, I wasn’t drawn to the usual “landscape-ish” subjects, and I decided to play around with a “street photography” approach. (Today’s photo is an example.) I put a wide-angle lens on the 5D and wandered around one of the busiest parts of Seattle, the Pike Street Market, photographing the flow of people through the area. In addition, I spent an hour or more photographing the Gas Works Park.

For reason I have already forgotten, when I started working with the images of the Gas Works I decided to experiment with some decidedly non-natural modifications to the images. Intrigued, I applied the same approach to some of the Pike Place Market images – though not to the one posted today. The resulting “imaginary landscapes” and related photos will appear here this coming week.

I’m not sure where this is heading just yet – it could turn out to be a short-term experiment, simply a way of learning a new technique or two, or a new thread in my photography.

Summer Photography

Since I’m in the fortunate position of being gainfully unemployed during the summer months (I’m a college faculty member who now avoids summer session) and living relatively close to the Pacific Coast, San Francisco, and the Sierra Nevada, summer is photography season for me. The photos posted here will generally reflect these summer themes: I earlier posted a series of images from an early July trip to the Sierra crest near Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite, you’ll see a whole series of San Francisco photographs through a good part of July, and later this summer I should have some new work from the Sierra back-country.

My favorite way to photograph in San Francisco is on foot. A few days ago I spend the better part of an afternoon in the Marina district between Fort Mason and Fort Point with a side trip to the Palace of Fine Arts. (Photographs from this session are currently in the queue.) I frequently wander along the waterfront between the Caltrain station and the Ferry Building, often venturing up into various nearby downtown areas.

My Sierra summer visits include short car-camping trips (like that early July trip mentioned above), short pack trips, and one or more extensive back-country pack trips of a week or more. It looks like this summer I’ll spend some time in the Minarets/Thousand Island Lake area and in the true High Sierra just west of the crest between Cottonwood Lakes and the Tyndall Creek area.

Gallery is Coming

For some time I’ve been planning to create a gallery of my photographs that would be more organized and more easily searchable. Well, I finally have some time to work on this project and it is starting to take shape. Early efforts are now online at https://gdanmitchell.com/gallery/, with more to come during upcoming days and weeks.
