A Note from Sydney

Thank you to Adrienne from Sydney, Australia who sent a me very nice note about this web site today. Despite the distance (is it possible to be any farther from Yosemite?) she has visited a few times and enjoyed recalling the experience. Don’t we all!?

People News

It is great to hear from and meet people who have seen my photography and found it interesting or even moving. Today I received a very nice email from Nik in the UK, who had visited many of the places I photograph during a visit to California in the mid-1980s. Although he has been all over the world since then, he writes that Death Valley “was the place that got under my skin.” I am flattered when he tells me, “I have just been taken straight back in time and space. Stunning work, man, a thousand thanks from the cold, damp United Kingdom.”

Thanks, Nik. You made my day here in sunny California. (Watch for more Death Valley photos. I’m planning another trip there soon.)

When fellow San Francisco Bay Area folks purchase a photo I try to deliver it myself when possible – and not just to avoid damage during shipping! Yesterday I drove up the peninsula to deliver a print of a black and white photo of the San Francisco skyline to Sandra. I like to meet the people who are interested in my work and to tell them a bit about their new photograph – how, where, and why it was taken and so forth.

Night Photography – That’s All For Now

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been posting photographs from my recent shoot at Mare Island Naval Shipyard during the early March full moon. Today’s photo is the last from that series that I’ll post – except for one photograph taken just before nightfall that is still in the queue. I’m sure that there will be more night photography here before long, but I’ll be posting other subjects again soon. (For more SF Bay Area night photography, visit The Nocturnes web site and see my Night page.)

… I have a suggestion for Canon in re the “big” 20D/30D/40D question. (You know, the one causing untold neverending shuddupshuddupSHUDDUP existential anguish all over every Canon forum on the ‘net….)

The suggestion: drop it.

That’s right. Drop it altogether. Why does Canon need a camera in between the XTi (400D) and the 5D, anyway? Answer: maybe it doesn’t.
