Quick Note About Product Posts

From time to time I highlight certain products in posts here at the blog – often as part of my own review or report on the product or because of some special pricing or other offer. Since it is “that time of year” you are likely to see a few more than usual, so I thought I’d say a few things about this.

  • The blog has an “affiliate” relationship with several manufacturers/vendors. When you make a purchase by clicking a link on my blog a small percentage of the purchase price is returned to me, and this helps support the blog. If you like the blog, and especially if my reviews or reports have helped you with your purchase decision, I would be grateful if you would purchase through these links.
  • Purchasing though these links does not change your cost – you pay the same whether you purchase through my links or go directly to the vendor site. (A few offers come only through affiliate links and your price may be higher if you purchase directly.)
  • I currently only share links to vendors I do business with myself and/or whose products I have purchased and used.
  • In addition to occasional posts on specific offers from affiliate vendors, there are links to them in the sidebar of this web site. You can use those links to purchase any item from these vendors.
  • Not all links to professional photography services that I share are part of an affiliate relationship. For example, from time to time I mention things like photography workshops – most often by photographers I know and whom I recommend simply because I think the workshops are valuable.
  • There are more special offers at certain times of the year – like right now as the holidays approach!
  • The Deals Page archives recent offers.

Thanks for your support of the blog!

Portrait(s) of the Photographer as a Young Man

We (actually mostly my wife) recently began the process of scanning thousands of old photographs that we inherited or which have been sitting in closets. They range from snapshots from relatives on both sides of the family to serious photographs we made back in the BD (“before digital”) era – many slides, a good number of prints, and some negatives. There are tons of treasures buried in all of piles of images, and rediscovering them is a pleasure.

Today she came across two photographs of me from a long ago time. I think I must have been about 16 years old. I probably felt pretty grown up at the time but, man, do I look young! I’m almost certain that my father, Richard S Mitchell, made these photographs, and they appear to have been shot somewhere in our yard – the flowers look like my mother’s garden.

My father was a talented and enthusiastic amateur photographer who owned a succession of interesting and, for the era, modern cameras. As we earned his trust, he loaned some of them to us. (In retrospect, I wonder if he was doing so partly so that he would simply have to upgrade his own cameras so that the kids would have cameras. I now understand that mode of thinking quite well. ;-) He also had an enlarger and could set up a sort of impromptu darkroom in the bathroom, where he gave me my first lessons on black and white printing.

I am pretty certain that the occasion of these photographs was my acquisition of the first “good camera” that I purchased with my own hard-earned funds, by saving up my allowance, yard-mowing money, and funds earned by sharing a paper route with a neighborhood kid. I believe that it was a Minolta SRT-101, a nice basic film SLR that I purchased with a good little 50mm lens and to which I eventually added the little clip-on external light meter. Perhaps I’m reading into the two photographs, but I see two different aspects of my response to the new camera. In the first photo, it almost looks like I’m attempting to strike what I probably thought was the appropriate pose for the young photographic artiste that I undoubtedly imagined myself to be. In the second, I think I’ve let down my guard, and I seem to be gazing at my new camera with some combination of pleasure and surprise that I actually own the thing! :-)

Where has Dan been?

I haven’t exactly been hiding, but I have been way off the grid for about a week and a half while photographing with a group of friends at a beautiful Sierra Nevada back-country location. I returned very early this morning to find that a number of people have left comments here at the blog. Thanks for that! As soon as I have a chance to file through all of them (and dismiss the portion captured by the spam trap!) I will try to comment and respond where appropriate.

Web Site Updates for April 25, 2013

I have a couple of brief site news updates this morning:

  • I have updated the site’s Deals page to include current Canon promotions on DSLRs, DSLR/lens bundles, lenses, and Speedlights.
  • Also on the Deals page, links to the Fujifilm X-E1 mirrorless camera and lenses – which I have been using and liking recently.
  • Nearly two weeks ago I experienced some serious technical problems with the site. The site was briefly unavailable and for nearly a week access was impaired. I have mostly fixed the problems – and site access speeds should now be better than they were before the problem occurred. However, one or two features are temporarily unavailable – including the sidebar list of photographers and galleries. I hope to bring those resources back online soon.
