I Chickened Out

Or perhaps made a wise decision?

I was all set to drive over the Sierra Crest today for another session of autumn color photography. But when I checked the road reports early this morning I read that roads over Ebbetts, Sonora, and Tioga Passes were closed, and that chain requirements were up on 50, 80, 89, and the portions of 395 that I would drive on.

So I’m still at home. I am thinking of zipping up to San Francisco this afternoon to photograph some of the Fleet Week activities, including the Blue Angels. I still may try a one day marathon drive to the Sierra and back tomorrow, since this will be my last chance for fall color photography on the “east side” for the year.

  1. Inge, thanks for the report. I’m pretty certain that this is the last chance for decent aspen color this season. I do plan to do a long one-day loop tomorrow (Sunday). I’ll probably go over Carson, then Monitor, and then head south on 395 to as far as Lee Vining. I’m interested in Conway, Lundy, and perhaps Lee Vining Canyon – and yes, I have managed to hit all of this stuff on one-day trips before. (Better a one day trip than not making it there at all! ;-)

  2. Hi Dan,

I checked the roads as well. Took Hwy 88 over. No chains just snow tires or 4WD. No controls on 395, just in some spots snow tires or 4WD. I made it to Hope Valley by 7:30AM. It was slow going starting at Kirkwood. You better come over soon. It was cold all along 395, snowed at Conway Summit, June Lake, Convict alke and up in Bishop Creek Canyon. The trees are taking a beating even some of the green ones.
