Dawn sky along the Pacific Flyway, New Year’s Day, 2022.

For a few years we have been joining a group of friends and fellow photographers on New Year’s Day morning. We meet before dawn (and some of us join up the prior day) in a wild place, greet the first dawn of the New Year together, frequently in the company of thousands of birds, make photographs, and toast the new year. I made this photograph as the sky began to lighten during the first few minutes of my 2022 photography.

These places along the Pacific Flyway are magical. During some portions of the year they are filled with the sounds of migratory birds, and at almost any time they are places of solitude and stillness. Many feature wetlands areas that can produce views that consist almost entirely of sky. On this New Year’s Day morning a few thin clouds caught the first dawn light.
