A Best of Best Lists?

Jim M Goldstein has compiled a list of the “best of the year” images from a bunch of photographers who read his blog. I think it is interesting to see how photographers regard their own work, and these individual “best of” lists are a great resource… and a lot of fun to look at. Kudos to Jim for putting this list together and sharing it!

January 2008 News

I’m going to collect a few short bits a pieces together in one post this morning:

Email problem? – I just discovered that there may have been a problem with my email account during December. Please accept my apology if you sent me a message at dan@gdanmitchell.com and received no reply. I believe that the problem has been fixed, and I have set up a secondary email at gdanmitchell@gmail.com.

Current photos – December is one of my favorite times of the year in the Central California oak grassland hills. The current photographs of oak trees were made during the past month or so, and are part of a project that should eventually lead to a portfolio of black and white photographs of these oaks.

Seattle – I was able to spend a few (cold and damp) days in the Pacific Northwest during the first week of the new year. Photographs from that trip will not appear here until the end of January and first week of February. (You can preview some of them here, here, and here.)

Google ads – I’m experimenting with some small Google ads on this site. We’ll see how it goes – perhaps I’ll make enough to cover the hosting costs!

Night Photography at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Andy Fraser’s Night Photography Blog has information about an opportunity to photograph the Pigeon Point Lighthouse while the original fresnel lens light is in operation. The event is this Saturday Friday, November 17. I’m hoping to be there.

Here is some information from Andy’s site:

California State Parks, Pigeon Point Hostel, and the United States Coast Guard will commemorate the 135th Anniversary of the first lighting of Pigeon Point Lighthouse. This annual event features an open house in the historic fog signal building from 10am until 7pm. The highlight of the evening is from 6-8pm when the historic lighthouse?s Fresnel Lens lights up the sky. Exhibits in the 1899 Fog Signal Building will feature lighthouse history, videos, marine mammals, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park is located between San Francisco and Santa Cruz on Highway 1, about 50 miles south of San Francisco, or 25 miles north of Santa Cruz. For more information, please call (650) 879-2120 or click here.

Visit Andy’s blog (click on the link in the first paragraph above) to read more and to see a few photographs.

Sierra Fall Colors: Fading Fast

I’m back from another weekend chasing aspens and other icons of fall in the eastern Sierra. I’ll post more on this later, but for now I just want to say that if you are thinking of going to see this fall’s aspens… go immediately! It is already too late in many places, but if you hurry you can still find a few good stand – mostly in low altitude groves.
