Changes Coming

Sometime during the next few weeks there will likely be some rather major changes at this web site. I’m going to move to a new hosting service. I may rethink the way I store and present my photographs.

I may split the site into two separate sites – a blog and a gallery. The blog may end up as a blogger site, either the current mirror site or something different – or it may simply move to a WordPress blog at the new host. Some of these options will allow me to keep the blog at the current URL, while others may not.

I am still thinking through the logistics of online storage and presentation of my photographs. Recently I’ve been linking to copies stored at Flickr, and that seems to be working OK. I’ve also experimented with a gallery service through the new hosting company, and that option offers some advantages. Then there are the online photographers’ sites such as smugmug and pbase and the like. Too many choices!

If you follow this blog regularly and don’t want to lose track of it during the transition, I suggest that you also follow the blogger.com version at https://gdanmitchell.com/, subscribe to that site’s RSS feed, and watch here (and there) for announcements of changes.

A Question – Reader Response Appreciated

I am considering displaying the daily photos in somewhat smaller versions, as seen below:

Evening Rain, Yosemite Valley

Good thing? Bad thing? Either way is fine?

Thanks,

Dan

An Experiment is Underway

I’m beginning an experiment this week that may provide some benefits for this site and for site visitors. I’m going to try moving new photos to my Flickr account and serving the image content of this site from there.

Besides allowing me to more fully integrate the content of my several web sites (including dan’s outside), I’m hopeful that this may relieve the server performance bottleneck that affects the display of photos on my sites.

Don’t be surprised if there a few rough spots as I try to make this transition.

Reader Notes

I always enjoy hearing from people who visit this site. I thought I’d recognize a few interesting messages I received recently.

Andrew Thompson wrote to say that he has also recently started using a Canon 5D and shares my very positive reaction to this camera. He also said some very nice things about the site and my photography – thanks, Andrew!

Jason Liske wrote to ask for exposure information from one of my Racetrack Playa night photographs. (For the record, they ranged from about 5 minutes up to about 12 minutes.) We exchanged email and he shared a wonderful and detailed photograph of new snow in Yosemite Valley. It looks like he photographs many of my favorite subjects… and he has offered me an espresso the next time I pass his way while travelling to the Sierra.

Jeff Doty and I exchanged messages about some lens issues. He was complimentary about some of my Sierra and desert photographs, and I think he is a bit jealous of those of us living in California. Somehow I got the impression that he thinks there may be more photographic possibilities in California than in Ohio. ;-)

John Barclay wrote to ask about the logistics of driving to the Racetrack Playa. Dire warnings from the Death Valley Park rangers had left him very concerned about attempting the drive. John also shared a link to his photo web site.
