Team Saxo Bank rider Andy Schleck rides the route before the prologue time trial of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California professional bicycle race in Sacramento, California.

Among the good times for getting close shots of Tour of California riders is during the hour or so before the prologue time trial stage when the teams are out warming up on the course. While these shots don’t have the same intensity of those shot while the riders are actually doing the time trail, you do have the advantage of their lower speed and much less hectic shooting conditions.

Chase Group at Top of Tunitas Road, 2009 Amgen Tour of California

The chase group, led by Rock Racing with Astana’s Lance Armstrong right behind, tops the Tunitas Road climb in rain during state 2 of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California.

The lead group had arrived at the top of Tunitas Road just ahead of this chase group led by Rock Racing (likely trying to protect their rider who started the stage in the yellow jersey) and including Lance Armstrong. The stage had begun on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge in heavy rain, travelled down the coast past Half Moon Bay, and then headed up this steep road through redwood forests to arrive at Skyline Road. Any cyclist who has ever done a long, hard ride in pouring rain can relate to the looks of the faces of these riders.

Gustav Larsson of team Saxo Bank warms up before the prologue time trial of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California in Sacramento, California.

This is another shot from the team staging area near the start of the prologue time trial stage of the Tour of California. Anyone planning to photograph the tour might want to think about spending some time in these areas before and after the stage, as there are often far more opportunities here to photograph riders and other interesting race-related stuff than there are as the peloton spins past at over 30mph in a blur!

Bob Roll, Tour of California

Former professional bicycle racer and current cycling commentator Bob Roll near that Astana team van before the start of the prologue stage of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California in Sacramento, California.

I photographed Bob Roll as he queued up more or less with the rest of the crowd to wait for Lance Armstrong to emerge from the Astana team van to warm up before the prologue stage of the 2009 Tour of California. For those who don’t follow cycling, Roll was a professional bicycle racer back in the days of the 7/11 team, the first great American cycling team. Since that time he has become better known as a television bicycle racing announcer working on the Versus broadcasts of major cycling races.
