Yellow Tulip

Yellow Tulip
“Yellow Tulip” — A yellow tulip blooms in spring.

And suddenly it is spring. We never get what most people would think of as “real winter” here in my part of California, but the change from our mild winter to spring is still obvious and striking. For more than a month the hills have been turning green, and more recently flowers have begun to blossom, in gardens and in the wild.

I photographed this yellow tulip on a visit on a local garden earlier this week. My preference is to photograph these flowers in soft, shaded light, so we went early in the morning and we sought out flowers in shady locations.

Tulip After Rain

Patty and I had a plan to visit a Bay Area garden where she often photographs spring flowers. According to the calendar, it was time for the tulips and other flowers to be at peak bloom. But as the day approached, it was clear that there was a chance of rain which, to say the least, can make this sort of photography challenging. We headed there early in the morning anyway, and it rained on us during the drive. The clouds were still thick when we arrived. Things were looking a bit uncertain.

But what had looked like deal-breaker weather actually turned out to be nearly perfect. The rain stopped, and we had intermittent sunshine and clouds — all kinds of interesting light. And while the rain ended, there was water everywhere, including on these colorful tulip blooms.

These plants were abundant in a public garden we visited back at the end of spring. Remember spring? Back when California was still green, and before our summer golden brown arrived? That aside, in this San Francisco Peninsula garden something is always green no matter what the season.

Most of my photography on this visit focused on flowers, but here it is more about the plant itself — sturdy stem with thick leaves growing upwards and with thorn-like appendages along their edges. The faint purple coloration at the edges of the leaves sets of the bright green.

Three Ivy Leaves

Three spring ivy leaves emerge from the shadows.

Ivy is among a group of (sometimes) shade-loving plants whose leaves intrigue me. The shapes, colors, and textures are immediately appealing, especially in soft light. But the complexity of their arrangement can make it difficult to find compositions. The beauty of the leaves makes me think it will be easy, but the complexity challenges me.

Here a few newer leaves stood out a bit from the darker background leaves — both because of their newness and because they were a bit forward and in the light.
