Aspen Grove, Morning Light – North Lake. Sierra Nevada, California. October 5, 2008. © Copyright G Dan Mitchell – all rights reserved.
Morning light filters through yellow and golden leaves to light and color the forest floor beneath an aspen grove at North Lake, California.
These aspen trees are in the roadside grove near the “tree tunnel” at North Lake, in the Sierra Nevada above Bishop, California. After shooting the “big views” around North Lake that include the surrounding peaks, I walked back to this accessible grove and spent some significant time walking slowly among these trees, looking for interesting compositions. One feature that drew me to this image was the softly colored light shining through the canopy of colorful leaves and gently illuminating the sides of the aspen trunks; the light forms of the trunks themselves also interested me.

Yes, that “favorite shot” is awesome. The color really stands out and the background is stunning.
Nice work. Also appreciate you bay area shots, as that is where I live. I need to look down, and closer!

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your comment, Doug! I often move between shooting the big landscape shots (on this morning that included peaks with new snow) and the more intimate details of the scene. The 30-45 minutes I spent in this aspen grove was very rewarding. I just wandered in and walked around slowly, looking for things that caught my attention. I did one of my favorite shots of this trip just a few minutes earlier a few feet from this shot.

Your perspective always amazes me. I was up that way and was not even looking at the compositions that you look for. That is what I love about photography!
Keep on inspiring
Doug
