Landscape Photographers’ Lament – Rising Gas Costs

Gas Station Sign, Death Valley
Gas Station Sign, Death Valley

This sign, seen on a recent trip to the California desert, illustrates the dilemma facing so many nature and landscape photographers, namely how to afford to put enough gas in the tank to make it to the best locations. As the cost of filling the tank of the SUV approaches that of another cheap prime lens many are turning to street photography, weddings, and other genres.

  1. Hey Dan,

You know in Denmark the prices above is not Aprils Fool but reality ….

  2. This is outrageous! I got so mad thinking about it after I saw it. I started to write a letter to the CEO of Chevron but that just made me angrier because all I could think was they don’t give a rip about some letter. Then the doorbell rings. It’s some guy selling magazine subscriptions and I start to tell him to move on when it hits me THIS IS HOW I SHOW THEM!!! I gave away my car on the spot to this guy! He thought I was crazy but he’s the one who’s paying the MAN now, not me! I’m not sure how I’ll get to work in the morning but that’s OK, I feel so much better. Thanks Dan, I owe you one.

  3. I had thought of going throough DV on way back from Vegas but wind advisory made me think it would not be worth it. This adds to the good decision I made. Always fill up outside the park.

    1. Chris, before you change your plans (!) please do note the date of this post… and consider the possibility that a little April Fools photoshopping just might have played a part in this! :-)

  4. Just did a quick conversion. Here in Western Australia we’re currently paying about $7.40(us) per gallon on regular fuel…. So don’t feel too bad. It can get worst.

  5. Not sure if this is for April Fool’s but I googled around and this Chevron station is nearly $6 / gallon as of today. Expensive no matter how you slice it!

I basically cut out the frequent non-local day trips because with stock photography license fees what they are and increased gas prices, it’s just too expensive to drive down to a beach and shoot a sunset. For rich people I’m sure it’s no big deal but for most people this is a real concern.

  6. I can only hope that’s an April Fool’s joke. If not, all I can say is there is NO excuse for THAT!!!

  7. I just filled up for the equivalent of $5.60 a gallon here in British Columbia – I guess it wasn’t so bad after all! While I sometimes miss the locations that I could get to with an SUV – my small car does get 38mpg which is starting to become more and more of a good thing.
