We passed this cemetery along a drive to the remote coastal village of Elgol on the southeast coast of the Isle of Skye. While parts of Skye are very busy and popular with tourists, there weren’t many people along this remote single-track road where there aren’t really any “tourist icon” sites. It was just lovely Scottish countryside —broad valleys, lakes, and some impressive mountains.
The cemetery is in the yard next to the old, ruined stone church, which I believe gives it the “Cill Chriosd” name. The roof of the church is gone but the walls still mostly stand. A sign at the entrance gate noted that war dead are buried here. For an American, living in a country that is isolated from wars at home by two oceans, visiting these places, found all over the country side, brings home the reality of the two great wars of the Twentieth Century.
