Forest and Fog at the Pena Palace

Forest and Fog at the Pena Palace
“Forest and Fog at the Pena Palace” — Thick fog engulfs the forest surrounding the Pena Palace near Lisbon, Portugal.

The morning weather was not promising when we took the train from Lisbon, to visit the Pena Palace in the mountains above Sintra. By the time we arrived at the entrance to the palace grounds we we under cloudy skies and soon engulfed by low clouds and fog. I made this photograph as we walked through the forest near the palace.

At first I think we may have been a bit disappointed by this weather — and challenged to keep dry and warm! But as the day wore on my attitude changed. While a warm and sunny day might have felt pleasant, this challenging weather produced a lot more visual drama and mystery.

Forest and Fog

Forest and Fog
“Forest and Fog” — Fog envelops the forest near Pena Palace, Portugal.

Back in May, during our Portugal travels, we took the train from Lisbon to Sintra so we could visit the historic Pena Palace. This structure sits on a high point in the mountains above Sintra, and it is a remarkable visual presence. I suppose that on a typical day this could be a warm and sunny place — but we arrived to light rain, fog, and clouds, a bit to our surprise.

This was not necessarily a bad thing. The temperatures were cool but comfortable, the crowds were likely suppressed a bit, and the fog and clouds produced some dramatic effects. I stopped along the walk to the palace and made a series of photographs of this fog-covered forest.

Pena Palace

Pena Palace
“Pena Palace” — The Pena Palace, on the summt of a mountain near Sintra, Portugal.

We missed the Pena Palace when we visited Lisbon a few years ago, so this time we made sure to set aside a day for the train ride to Sintra to see it. (It isn’t the only thing there — a remarkable “Moorish castle” is nearby.) The weather was… interesting. We had rain and wind and fog, to the point that it was difficult to be outside on the castle grounds. However, these conditions also made the scene more dramatic than it would have been on another pleasant, blue sky day.

Later I’ll share photographs made on the palace grounds. I made this one while traversing the old walls of the Moorish Castle. It also lies on a ridge, but a lower one than the palace. From there I had a dramatic view looking up to the summit of the ridge where the wildly colorful Pena Palace sits, complete with dark clouds moving past.
