Daylily blossoms in the Commemorative Garden at the Gene and Irene Wockner Hospice Center.

This is another photograph of the bed of daylily blooms in the Commemorative Garden at the Wockner Hospice in Kirkland, Washington. I was thinking this morning about why it is that these particular flowers ended up being my main subject during the brief “photo walk” I took through the garden, and I realized that one main reason was that they were in the shade! When I photographed in the late afternoon, much of the garden was in full or partial sun – not great conditions for photographing the forms of flowers. But this area of the garden was shaded behind tall trees, leaving me with much softer light to work with. In addition, both the colors and shapes of these flowers are fascinating, especially here where a group of them ended up all slanting across the frame in much the same way. The flowers are also quite varied. As I understand it, the name “daylily” refers to the short life of the flowers in their prime, as in “they only last a day.” Consequently, while there are many flowers they are at various different stages of development: the small and tightly formed buds, the longer shapes just before they open, the fully opened and most colorful forms, and then various stages of “decay” as they turn beautiful, darker colors and shrivel up.

Blooming milkmaids (Dentaria cardimine californica) plants on the forest floor beneath the redwoods at Muir Woods National Monument, California.

Another bunch of milkmaid flowers along a hillside trail at Muir Woods National Monument. These flowers were growing in small grotto-like hollow in the hillside, and the plants in the background are the ubiquitous redwood sorrel (or Oregon oxalis) which look just like clover plants.

Flowers of the milkmaid plant bloom on the forest floor beneath the redwoods, Muir Woods National Monument, California.

In a very dark section of the trail above the creek bottom at Muir Woods I found many, many flowers last weekend, including quite a few milkmaid flowers. These are a bit tricky to photograph – especially when a breeze is blowing! As the flowers wave in the moving air, in very dark conditions on the forest floor it is hard to avoid blowing out the brightest part of the flowers.

Flowers at Dawn, Death Valley Dunes

Flowers at Dawn, Death Valley Dunes

Wildflowers in dawn light at the Death Valley Dunes with the Funeral Mountains in the distance. Photographed more or less behind the main dunes near Stovepipe Wells.

I had hiked out “behind” the dunes before sunrise, starting a bit closer to Stovepipe Wells than many may. This affords an easier route the the part of the higher part of the dunes, crossing a more level route rather than slogging across the waves of sand. The sun rose just as I came around behind the dunes.
