There I was, with a long lens on my camera to photograph something else, when I noticed the flocks of shorebirds flying along the coastline in the dusk light.

I like this photograph because it evokes the quiet and warmth of early evening summer light in the Sierra. This group of university students was bunched together on the summit of Lembert Dome above Yosemite National Park’s Tuolumne Meadows, quietly watching the sunset scene unfold.

On this cold December evening I detoured to Treasure Island on my way home from Muir Woods to photograph the holiday lights of the San Francisco skyline across the waters of the San Francisco Bay. (Although not apparent in the small image displayed here, the original is stitched from a series of 12 megapixel files, producing a highly detailed image that can be enlarged significantly.)

I was set up with my ultra-wide lens to photograph the columns and arches of this impressive structure when this exuberant child came flying through the scene. (A moment later he was followed by his mother, who was trying – with little success it seemed – to chase him down.) Not only was I taken by his energy and spirit, but also by how small the buildings made him seem.
