The northwest Scotland landscape is spectacular in so many ways — the highlands mountains of course, but also the coast, and the lower elevation valleys. It is, for this part of the world, relatively “empty,” in the sense that you are often out of sight of signs of civilization, aside from the single-track road you might be driving. But empty as it is, it is not wilderness, and there are plenty of little hamlets and isolated homes and lodgings.
We stopped here to look at Loch Stack, a large loch along the route we drove to ad from Altnaharra, where we stayed for a couple of nights. From way up near the extreme northwest of the country we headed south on a less traveled road that passed this spot. (We got a second chance to photograph it since our return drive passed the same way.) We initially stopped to view the loch and surrounding mountains, but I soon found myself attracted to photographing the stone building at the edge of the water. And when a break in the clouds sent that lovely beam of light across the background hill and lodge, I had to make another photograph.
