Trees and Rising Sun

Trees and Rising Sun
“Trees and Rising Sun” — The morning sun, slighlty diffused by clearing fog, rises behind Point Lobos trees.

Sometimes I arrive at a location with no specific plan in mind beyond “making photographs.” That was the case on this morning when I drove down toward the Big Sur area in the early morning. Before Monterey I encountered thick fog, and I started contemplating fog photographs, perhaps at Point Lobos. The fog continued as I passed Monterey, skirted Carmel, and started the main highway beyond Carmel Valley. It looked like I would get foggy conditions at Point Lobos… until a moment later when the fog inexplicably cleared.

By this time I had mostly committed to Point Lobos, and it did look there was still some thinning fog along the shoreline, so I headed in. I was hoping for the fog itself as a subject, but also for the softer light that it produces along the edges as sun starts to break through. I loaded up my equipment and started walking. A short distance up a trail I looked over and saw the sun rising beyond these trees and decided to head over that way. Although the blue sky tells us otherwise, there was still a bit of low fog softening the light.
