Fallen Leaves

Fallen Leaves
“Fallen Leaves” — Fallen autumn aspen leaves in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.

I have spent less time in the Sierra this season than usual — perhaps due to some other travel earlier in the year. I finally got u there near the end of August for a few days of photography and mind-clearing. But over the past two weeks I’ve managed two trips over the crest to photograph the fall color transition and related subjects. This photograph comes from the most recent of the two visits.

The photograph is (yet another) example of how it pays to look beyond the thing you thought you were there to see. I had stopped by a little roadside aspen grove that looked promising but turned out to be less so. I was about to move on when I… looked down. I saw that the ground was almost completely carpeted with freshly fallen leaves, many still very colorful. I searched around a bit and found this group that includes a few highlight leaves — the green one, another with a bit of red, and the orange leaf at far right.
