These conditions are perhaps my favorite for photographing migratory birds — thick fog that is beginning to clear, allowing just a bit of directional light to illuminate my subjects at times, but still thick enough to to block out distant distractions. These are transitory conditions, like a sunset or skiable spring snow. You need to be there and ready, and get to work quickly when the right light happens — it won’t last long!

Here in California we can typically find these conditions this time of year in many, many places — at the coast, along the shores of bays and lakes, next to rivers, all up and down the state. This photograph comes from the Great Central Valley, that place we tend to regard mostly as agricultural country, stitching hundreds of miles from Southern California to just below Mount Shasta. I had gone on this day because I knew there would be fog — the birds are less of a certainty. As the fog thinned and the light increased I found this spot and worked it as the conditions changed.

As autumn shifts towards winter, as daylight savings time ends, and as the nights get longer… the time of year I think of as migratory bird season begins. All over the northern hemisphere birds that breed in more northerly locations during the warm months head south to find more hospitable locations to spend the winter — places with food and relatively warmer temperatures. In many places the migration has started and — at least from the perspective of those of us who live in the migratory destinations — the birds have arrived and will continue to do so over the next month of so.

Earlier this week I headed towards on such location to drop of some prints at California’s Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival. (If you are thinking of going… it ends on Sunday, November 3 this year. If you missed it this year, visit the site and sign up for information about future events.) Since I was driving over there in the morning anyway, I decided to leave early enough to check out some sandhill crane locations at sunrise. This was one of the first crane photos of the new season, and as an unruly flock of the birds passed by I photographed them with a longer shutter speed, allowing motion blur to accentuate their motion, and over-exposing to produce a high-key interpretation.

Expect to see quite a few bird photographs during the next week or so. David Hoffman and I are featured in “Birdscapes,” an exhibition of our bird photography at the Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst, located near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park. The two of us photograph birds and the landscapes they inhabit all along the Pacific Flyway. There is a lot more information about the show including details of location and dates at this web page. I made this photograph on a winter evening, as a slight foggy haze filled the atmosphere and the western sky turned a lovely shade of pink. A large flock of geese was alternately feeding on pastureland and erupting into the sky en masse. I made this photograph at the very end of the day as the last faint sunlight illuminated the birds on the ground as other birds arrived to join them.

Two sandhill cranes take to the air on a foggy morning.

Most often when I see these birds in flight they are in somewhat larger groups, especially during the daily fly-in and fly-out events. Then they may fly in long lines, either side by side or beak to tail. By comparison to some of the other birds of similar size, they usually have a fairly smooth and steady sort of flight — with the exception of absolutely manic moves that they sometimes make when they arrive in the evening, with some birds seemingly dropping suddenly out of the sky and skidding off in odd directions.

This pair was almost heading straight toward me, and at a fairly low altitude. This is a bit unusual, as that groups that are about to fly over me typically divert at the last minute and pass to one side or the other. (I’d guess that out of all the groups that look like they will fly right over me, no more than one our of twenty actually do.) One thing I enjoy about this photograph is that you can see the birds in two different ways — either as a pair of separate individuals or as a striking combined x-shaped pattern.
