Kosovo Mountains

Kosovo Mountains
“Kosovo Mountains” — Mountains haze in Kosovo— the “Accursed Mountains.”

This photograph comes from a wonderful day in the “Accursed Mountains” of Kosovo west of Pec. It is full of great memories, though short on specific location details. We headed into the mountains from Pec, following a narrow and rugged river valley. Eventually we passed through a mountain town and continued to ascend. We took a narrow side road and eventually got out and walked… right to the Montenegro border. From there we somehow ended up at a remarkable “lodge” where we had a stupendous lunch on a grand outdoor covered deck.

I made the photograph at the lodge, looking back up towards the summit of these beautiful mountains and directly in to the haze- and sun-filled atmosphere. Side note: I read that there is some difference of opinion regarding how these beautiful mountains came to be known as the “Accursed Mountains.” From what I saw and from some subsequent reading, it would not surprise me if this area becomes a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts.

White Drin Waterfall

White Drin Waterfall, Kosovo
“White Drin Waterfall” — The White Drin Waterfall , near Peja, Kosovo.

For this American, used to spending time in our national parks and in our wilderness areas, my visit to this place was a bit of a culture shock. This waterfall and a nearby cave complex are part of a “natural monument” in Kosovo, at the village of Radac a few miles west of Peja, Kosovo. Much to my surprise, the crowds here were absolutely huge. The first challenge was finding a place to park, and it turned out to be almost impossible. It seemed like everyone in Kosovo was walking this trail — families, foreign visitors, you name it. Booths along the trail sold food, drink, and trinkets.

On one hand, this was not exactly a wilderness experience. On the other hand… people clearly love this place. And it is quite beautiful. The river flowing below this waterfall is full of picturesque boulders, and lush trees overhang the water. My understanding is that this waterfall is regarded to be the source of the White Drin River, which flows from here into Albania.

Mountain Haze, Kosovo

Mountain Haze, Kosovo
“Mountain Haze, Kosovo” — Forest-lined river gorge along the road to the Accursed Mountains, Kosovo.

This photograph came late on a day when we traveled far into mountains to the west of Peja, Kosovo. I have vivid memories of the day, of what I saw, of what we did – but it is now extremely difficult to identify specific locations and features. I know that we traveled west into a narrow river gorge, and eventually climbed out of it, that we ended up on a tiny road that dead-ended at the Montenegro border… which my Kosovo host warned me not to approach. After other adventures we returned down that same narrow canyon.

As we descended, the scenery was often spectacular. Here the river descended steeply over rocks between steep, tree-covered canyon walls. We paused briefly, and I hopped out of the car to stand at the edge of this lush canyon and make a few photographs… of a river whose name I do not know.

Gorge, River, and Forest

A river flows through a narrow moutain gorge past forest near Peja, Kosovo.

We spent four nights in Kosovo, where we were lucky to stay in the home of a local, the father of a member of our extended family. Because of our relative’s close relationship to the country — he was brought up there — we saw and experienced things that you might miss on a traditional tourist itinerary. For one thing, on several occasions he steered us to some remarkable mountain terrain, landscapes that rival “my” Sierra Nevada. On this day I made this photography he promised us steep canyons and gorges. We were not disappointed.

Trying to explain exactly where I made this photograph is a bit complicated. From the town of Peja (like many Kosovo towns it also has other names.) we headed into the nearby Albanian mountains, which rise from the edge of town. Here we headed into a very narrow mountain gorge, so narrow that in a few places the driving became rather “interesting.” I persuaded the group (of mostly non-photographers) to make a brief stop so that I could photograph. Here the river flows past impressively, the valley walls are covered in vegetation, slopes rise to much higher ridges, and the canyon becomes very steep and narrow.
