This lone fisherman was sitting above the roiling winter surf of the Big Sur California coastline. With surroundings like this it really shouldn’t matter whether you catch anything!

One other comment: It occurred to me afterwards that this would be an entirely different photograph if the very small figure of the fisherman had not happened to be on that rock at the moment I was there to make the photograph.

A rugged section of the California Pacific coast south of San Francisco on a winter day with huge surf. Shooting this one was fun – I stopped amost randomly near this spot and carried my gear across a mostly untracked meadow to the top of these cliffs.

I photographed this wave and the ocean receding into sunlit coastal clouds and fog along the Pacific coast between Santa Cruz and San Francisco – on the day of the Mavericks Surf competition a bit further up the coast.
