One of the things that Sierra Nevada aspen photographer are always looking for is leaf color other than the ubiquitous yellow-gold seen on the vast majority of aspens. That color can be quite beautiful, but colors that contrast with it are special. This could be the green of yet-to-change trees, but ideally it is the beautiful red and orange leaves that appear less frequently. In most cases these rarer colors appear among larger numbers of yellow trees, and they can stand out wonderfully against that background.

I photographed these trees near a spot where I often pause to look at early yellow color, but where I usually do not photograph. However, on the visit during the third week of October (later than usual for me) essentially all of the leaves had turned, and I notices some beautiful orange and red trees that I hadn’t seen before. I took a short walk to a slightly elevated camera position and photographed them with a bit of meadow and pond in the foreground.

A small change in a subject can alter how we see it and even make photographs possible in a location that might have not worked in the past. I have driven past this grove scores of times, occasionally stopping to. look at some colorful nearby trees. But I never took the time to walk just a little bit further to this camera position. Why not? Often there are too many people here, and when I usually visit the color is not at its prime. But this time I came about a week later and on a quiet weekday. The color was much more interesting, and the entire time I was there I saw only one other person.

The beginning of the Sierra aspen color season is a special time, and the beginning of the transition never fails to catch my attention. My favorite time frame is usually the first two weeks of October, perhaps because the start of the change is so compelling. But things are different — and equally interesting — a bit later, following that early color peak. I made this photograph in the third week of the month, when trees at the higher elevations had already lost most of their leaves. Even here a lot of foliage had fallen. However, this meant that virtually all of the remaining leaves were shades of yellow, orange, and red… and the thinner foliage revealed the white aspen trunks.

Trees, Early Season Snow

Eastern Sierra Nevada trees and the aftermath of an early season dusting of snow

Since it had snowed during our drive to the eastern Sierra the previous day, we knew that we would have some opportunities to photograph snow on this morning up in Bishop Creek. We began the day along the eastern escarpment of the range in the high desert, where we photographed the first dawn light on the snow-coated peaks of the crest. Once this light show ended, we packed up and headed up into the canyon to look for aspen color. For this particular date in October it seemed like the color had reached lower elevations than would usually be the case, and before long we encountered large stands of trees in full autumn color.

We stopped to photograph one of the first groups of aspens, and after making a few photographs of the colorful trees I began to look at the snow covering the steep banks of the nearby Bishop Creek. I can photograph aspens every fall, but I don’t always see new snow when I visit in early October! The first morning sun was just about to strike these trees as the sun topped the high ridge above us, and the scene seemed distinctly winter-like to me.
