At about this time two years ago, near the end of the Before Times, we were in New York City for the holidays. It was a trip much like previous visits there — we mingled in gigantic crowds, walked almost everywhere, occasionally froze in very un-California weather, ate in packed restaurants, and did pretty much all of the things one does in a busy, crowded, and intense place like New York. Although we had no idea at the time — the first news of the oncoming pandemic had still not arrived — this would be the last big trip like this for years.

I mentioned above that we walk a lot in Manhattan. Those who don’t know the place are, it seems, often surprised to find that almost everyone there walks, residents and visitors alike. Certainly part of the reason is that it is not a friendly place to drivers. But it also really is a friendly place to walkers, despite what you might think. We always wander around on foot a lot when we visit, and even in winter we’ll sometimes walk long distances. This was one of those days. We started in more or less Midtown and then headed south all the way to Lower Manhattan below the City Hall area, where we met family members. Close to our destination we passed this scene at a subway entrance near City Hall as the day was ending and evening lights were appearing.

Cranes atop the new World Trade Center building.

Those who recall the events of 9/11 have a variety of memories of that date and what followed. The subject is too big for me to claim to address it in two paragraphs and a photograph, so I’ll simply recall a few things of my own from that date. Back then it was my habit to get up early, turn on the radio while having breakfast, and listen to news. The first report here on the West Coast lacked much detail but mentioned a plane hitting one of the towers. I immediately thought of older incidents where small planes struck tall buildings, and I assumed it was such a story. But from there began a crescendo of news that got worse and worse over the day and beyond — thousands died and America went to war and the effect still reverberate.

On a visit to New York around New Year’s Day 2000 we had ridden the elevators and climbed the stairs to venture out on the catwalks above one of the towers at night. Among other things, we had watched passing planes from that vantage point. We did not visit New York again until very close to exactly one decade after the attack. Thinking back, we somehow mostly managed to avoid the WTC site until late in the visit when we finally went there. It was an overwhelming experience, though at that point it was a construction site — a place of growth rather than destruction — but the fact of what had happened there could not be ignored. I made the photograph of the new tower under construction from the Brooklyn Bridge.

Leaves after rain, and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens

Just for fun, nature photography from… Brooklyn, New York! I made the photograph at the Brooklyn Botanic (not “botanical!”) Garden during our visit earlier this month. We have various family members living in Brooklyn, so it is a place we visit somewhat regularly, yet we had only been to the garden one or two times in the past. As we arrived it began to cloud up, so we ducked inside, first for lunch and then to visit the O’Keeffe exhibition at the nearly museum.

Inside the museum we were cut off from the outside, but when we exited it was clear that a big line of thunderstorms had rolled through. There was water everywhere as we walked back across the park in the humidity and warmth. Along the way we passed this bed of plants and these beautifully formed leaves caught my attention. The remaining clouds made the light soft, and the water droplets from the rain still covered the leaves.

Walking Man and Brick Building

A man walks past a brick building in Brooklyn, New York

Near the start of our recent long travels we stayed several days in Brooklyn, visiting that area and others around Manhattan. We stated in an area not far from the Brooklyn waterfront, near the end of one of the bridges crossing the East River. Due to scheduling reasons, we were only able to wander this neighborhood a little bit at first, but later we did find some time to explore a bit.

Just north of our location — roughly Williamsburg — was an area with restaurants and shops, where we figured out we would have been luck looking for coffee and meals, since right around our lodgings there wasn’t much. My recollection — slightly vague now six weeks later — is that I made this photograph while walking in this area. I think I remember seeing this squared-looking red (painted) brick building first, and then waiting for someone to walk through the scene.
