Fleisch Bridge, Pegnitz River

“Fleisch Bridge, Pegnitz River” — The Pegnitz River flows through Nürnberg near the Fleisch Bridge.

This photograph comes from our late-autumn visit to Nürnberg, Germany.. This is a large city, but we spent the entire time within the confines of the old city. We were there for three days, on a visit timed for the city’s famous Christmas market. It is our understanding that many regard this as the biggest of the German holiday markets, and it certainly draws a lot of people. Many streets were very crowded, especially in the main area of the market square.

However, it was possible to escape the crowds. One way, of course, was to go out very early in the morning before they arrived. Another was to seek out less-traveled streets and walkways. I made this photograph on a quiet bridge across the Pegnitz River, which flows through center of the town. Here the water moves slowly, there are few people, and there are even some trees along the water.

Heidelberg Castle, Bridge, and Altstadt

“Heidelberg Castle, Bridge, and Altstadt” — A boat on the Neckar River sails under die Alte Brücke and past the Altstadt and Heidelberg Castle.

Heidelberg is almost always our “home base” when we travel to Europe, annd our trips frequently start with a visit to our relatives there. At this point we almost feel like we know the place, at least their neighborhood and the Altstadt area in the photograph. The “old town” area stretches along the Neckar river and includes several features visible in the photograph — the “old bridge” (or Alte Brücke) and the Heidelberg castle, among htem. I made the photograph from the Philosophenweg, or philosopher’s way, a footpath in the hills next to the river.

Our previous visits have been in the summer, when the weather in this part of Europe is pretty warm. This time, however, we went at the end of autumn and it was distinctly wintry! Temperatures hovered around freezing, it was cloudy virtually the entire time, and we even had brief snow!

Looking across the Neckar River toward Heidelberg Altstadt, Theodor Heuss Bridge, and Schloss Heidelberg (Heidelberg Castle).

As predicted earlier, this is another straight-ahead travel photograph. The photograph looks across the Neckar River at the Theodor Heuss Bridge, over Altstadt Heidelberg (the “old town”), and up to Schloss Heidelberg (Heidelberg Castle).

Heidelberg is a home base when we travel to Europe, as Patty’s brother and his wife have lived in that area for a long time. We’ve stopped in there on each of our past three trips “across the pond,” so we have had time to get to know the parts of the city that are within walking distance of their place. And this scene is within that distance — up a hill, along a path, down some steps, and across the river, and we are there!
