Red and purple spring leaves.

I made this photograph during a morning visit to a botanical garden with Patty a few weeks ago. We arrived early enough that there were still areas next to hedges, under trees, and near structures that remained in the shade — the full daylight sun is often too intense and harsh for this sort of photography. These leaves, while themselves in shade, were close enough to brighter light to puck up some directional highlights.

The colors actually were pretty much this intense. The plant has very reddish (or maroon in some light) leaves, and the shadows shifted the balance toward blue. Something that only occurred to me much later — the soft, rounded shapes of the background level almost suggest the very blurry bokeh shapes in the even further distance.

We just returned from a week along the far northern California coast, with a few days in the Mendocino area followed by four more in the Redwood National and State Parks between Eureka/Arcata and Crescent City. Patty and I had several goals on this trip: getting away from the busy and crowded San Francisco Bay Area, visiting foggy redwoods while rhododendrons were in bloom, spending time along the coast, and — of course! — making photographs. We were successful on all counts… except for the fog! I seem to have a special knack for making the fog depart from the redwoods. While this makes the locals very happy, I have yet to encounter the lovely and widely-rumored Redwood National Park fog.

We spent the first two nights in Mendocino, the quaint little village on a peninsula jutting into the Pacific. On the first morning I was up and out the door relatively early, walking out along the northern headlands overlooking Mendocino Bay. Sunrise photography here can be a bit tricky, as the hills to the east obstruct the first light. But wait until the sun clears the forested ridges and add a bit of morning ocean mist and the scene becomes quite lovely. This photograph looks along the shoreline of the bay, past sea stacks and headland cliffs, toward the Big River delta and a Pacific Coast highway bridge.

“Sunrise, Fog And Mist, Spring HIlls” — Dawn fog and mist over green springtime California hills

I return to this theme frequently, but the annual spring transformation of California’s grasslands is a remarkable thing. It is also something that many visitors to the state miss. Many people come during the supposedly prime vacation season, probably between about Memorial Day in late May and Labor Day in early September. If they travel around the state much they are often impressed by how dry the place looks. They are correct — much of California is essentially arid during the warmer months, and the grasslands turn brown or, more poetically, “golden.”

However, in this regard our seasons are reversed by comparison to the snowier parts of the country, where winter is the colorless season. Our winter is the time of the Great Greening, or what I refer to as the Impossibly Green season. Shortly after winter (or late-autumn) rains arrive grasses emerge and grow straight through the winter. The intensity of the color of the green hills can become quite remarkable by late March and April. I made this photograph in a place that would strike most visitors as being a desert during most of the year. But on this morning all was green, with patches of wildflowers, and fog and mist floating above the beautiful hills at dawn.

Desert landscapes can have an almost surreal quality, with features that are close to unbelievable. (I suspect that this happens in most landscapes, but the “barren” desert reveals them more clearly.) The landscape is laid bard, and we get a clear view of eroded features, twisted rock strata, contrasting colors produced by layers of different materials.

In certain places, in the right light, the contests and patterns become even more striking. This is one of those locations, and it was a day with that kind of light. These eroded hills are threaded with both very light and very dark strata, sometimes directly juxtaposed. On this morning the low-angle, directional light was softened a bit by high clouds.
