Ice Plant is ubiquitous along freeways and in similar areas in many parts of California — likely because it is a hardy plant that produces some impressive flowers during part of the year. It is also a non-native that has become invasive in many areas, including some where it probably doesn’t belong.

I photographed this specimen in one of those probably-doesn’t-belong locations. It was growing on a coastal bluff in the upper section of the Big Sur coast, and burrowing its way into the natural ecology of the place. But the flowers were attractive, especially with a bit of early morning dew still on the petals.

I continue to work my way through the California spring wildflower photography — and this isn’t the end of it! This was a better-than-average year for wildflowers in the state. Winter rains were above normal, and a good portion of the rain fell later in the season, including some big storms that swept though in early March.

I photographed this flower in San Luis Obispo County, in one of the many oak and grassland areas that are so common in the state’s lowlands and foothills. We found a spot with uncounted flowers spread across large meadows, stopped, and spent a few hours wandering around with macro lenses on the cameras.

This desert globe mallow is one of my favorite desert flowers. In most cases that I’ve encountered, there may be a few scattered bushes, sometimes filled with these intensely orange flowers for a few springtime weeks, and especially abundant after wet winters.

2019 seemed like a slightly odd spring for wildflowers in Death Valley, where I made this photograph. A lack of early winter rains lead many to expect a rather poor wildflower season. However, even though it didn’t create the famous “superbloom” conditions, there were quite a few flowers in many places. They seemed to come a bit later than expected this year — perhaps a result of the drier early winter season and then very heavy rains just before the start of spring.

Pinnacles National Park is almost and “old friend” of a park for me. My family first visited when I was quite young, and I recall exploring the High Peaks Trail and the caves. Although I knew that there could be excellent wildflower displays here I had never gotten myself organized to photograph there. So this was my first time to try to accomplish that task.

I arrived early in the morning, and it was easy to see lots of wildflowers immediately. I decided to hike up the shore of a small reservoir, from which I would continue on to the High Peaks Trail. Along the first section of trail the route passed through a small, intimate valley, and it was in this area that I spotted and photographed these flowers.
