Yes, I seem to be in a retro frame of mind recently, what with a significant number of black and white images plus a thread of street photography. Every so often, I think, my roots in black and white photography seem to come back to the foreground. I began photography decades ago (how many decades I won’t say…) when my father took me — and my siblings — under his photographic wing. He started us with very basic cameras, and eventually we graduated to helping him in his home darkroom. Obviously, in those days, virtually everyone was workmen in black and white, so that’s were I started. My photography and that of the folks who caught my attention was entirely black and white. Eventually I moved to slide film, but that initial exposure to black and white stuck.

This is another of the photographs I made in Florence, Italy back in the summer of 2016. As often happens, I move on from a collection of photographs as other subjects catch my attention — so it is almost always profitable for me to return to the “abandoned” files later on, where I almost always discover images that I like. While Florence in the summer can be a very busy place, crowded with hordes of tourists, if you poke around in the right places at the right times you can find quieter scenes. And if you like soft, shaded light, you can often find that in abundance here, too.

As I continue revisiting some old raw file archives from nearly a decade ago, I’ve been going through some photographs from a weeklong visit to New York City. We were there partly for music-related activities, partly for family reasons, and partly to make photographs. A few years’ distance from the immediate experience lets me see the photographs a bit more objectively, I think, and I’ve found several that I think are worth sharing now.

For five or six years I’ve been doing a lot of handheld night street photography, but this photograph comes from before that period —actually from a single evening in Manhattan when I began photographing in twilight and just kept going. There are multiple ways to “read” this photograph. I think that one initial approach may be less than complimentary to the subject, but the more I think about it the more I see other perspectives that are positive. I’ll leave it to viewers to sort that out!

Two Hikers, Titus Canyon

Earlier this month I visited Death Valley National Park for a few days. I go there and photograph at least once each year — I’ve been visiting for a couple of decades and photographing the place seriously for about fifteen years. I often point out that there are few places where the effects of water are more obvious than in this unlikely location. Almost all features of the park are formed or sculpted by water, and these effects are very visible in the early bare desert landscape. I arrived only a day after extremely heavy rains, and the evidence was everywhere — flooded sections of roadway, wet and muddy washes, dunes that were still damp, large shallow lakes on playas.

Many park roads were closes, including the long dirt road through Titus Canyon. The road starts high in Amargosa Canyon, crosses the mountains, descends toward the Valley, and near the end passes through a section of very narrow canyon. Normally there is enough traffic there to interrupt the reverie of hikers, but the road was closed to vehicle traffic and we (some members of my family) and I enjoyed a long and quiet hike up the canyon. Here two hikers (my sister and her husband) are descending though one of the deeper and narrower sections of the canyon.

Construction Zone

Like most big cities, San Francisco is in a perpetual state of construction, demolition, and reconstruction. It is fun to imagine a city that arrives in a perfect state and stays there for a while — but that’s not going to happen. Among many San Francisco projects, one of the biggest right now involves constructing an underground transit route under the center of the City, and years of torn up streets have ensued. Although it is possible to imagine the project concluding now, there’s still a lot of work going on.

One major purpose of the route is to extend transit in a more effective manner from the Caltrain station at Fourth and Townsend. I frequently travel to the City by way of the train, and this visit was no exception, so I found myself walking straight up Fourth and past a section where the rails are above ground before they descend into a tunnel. Here the ongoing construction is separated by barriers from the (few) remaining traffic lanes.
