Winter Plants, fog, and Bird

Winter is the time of fog and migratory birds in California’s Central Valley. But once again and all too soon, we are approaching the end of that season. Orchards are blooming and temperatures are rising, and in a week or two the migratory geese will be on their way north again. The thick tule fogs will give way to the clearer skies of spring.

This photograph comes from a visit to the Valley back in January, on a day I chose precisely because it was going to be foggy. It turns out that I got too much of what I was looking for — the fog never cleared, and in the murk I could not find many of the birds I came for. Instead, I photographed the quiet and mysterious landscape.

The Blackbird Tree

This tree and I have a long history. I have photographed at this location for a years, certainly longer than a decade. It is one of my favorite places to photograph in the winter, when migratory birds arrive in California. This normally involves driving very slowly along rural roads in wetlands while watching for photographic opportunities. Way back when I started I used to stop frequently at this tree at the corner of a large pond. One winter, I was disappointed when the top half of the tree broke off, leaving a pretty ugly little snag.

But fast forward a number of years and the broken snag has sprouted brand new branches which now almost mirror the shape of the original tree. It seems to be a favorite hangout for small blackbirds, especially the redwing and tricolor blackbirds that are so common in this area — birds that sing perhaps the most exuberant bird song I know of.

Few birds can brighten a gray, foggy morning as well as the western meadowlark. Its brilliant yellow coloration stands out in the blue-gray foggy landscape. But that’s not all — its song is effusive and cheery. I hear that I’m not the only one who counts it as a favorite.

I encountered this one as I drove very slowly along a rural Central VAlley levee road, looking for landscapes and birds to photograph. At first it was almost hidden in the thick bull rushes, but when I got in just the right position it became clearly visible. A bit to my surprise the bird stuck around and posed for quite some time.

One of the fun things about knowing so little about birds is that I frequently have the opportunity to “discover” the obvious. (Those who know a bit about my travel photography may recognize that pattern from some of my travel stories.) For years I have wished that we had the European starlings that produce the remarkable “murmuration” flock behavior that you may have seen in videos. And now I find that these birds are here. Experienced birders are welcome to laugh at my ignorance — I’m laughing, too!

I came upon this one when I stopped along a Central Valley back road to marvel at and photograph trees full of trim-colored blackbirds. I put on the long lens and began to make pictures, and I soon realized that there were other birds mixed into the group, too. This European starling was close to the blackbirds, but just enough off to the side to indicate its independence. (Note: As a veteran non-birder, I’m totally prepared for someone to tell me I have misidentified it!)
