I had originally intended to hit the road this afternoon for points east of the Sierra crest for another round of aspen color (and other subjects) photography… but I changed my mind within the past 48 hours or so. Why? Several reasons, actually:
- Folks who are currently in the eastern Sierra and whose reports I follow are saying that the aspen color situation is still a bit difficult this season. As I expected, the highest groves are mostly devoid of leaves at this point and, oddly, many of the lower level groves have not shown signs of great color yet either. I’m not at all certain that another drive up there today would gain me better opportunities than I had during the past few weeks.
- With that in mind, the idea of another 600-800+ miles of driving is a bit less attractive (to put it mildly!) than it might otherwise be.
- I want to find some time to more thoroughly go over the aspen and other photographs that I’ve made during the past few weeks – so far I’ve only had a chance to “pick off” the most obvious keepers, and I know there are others there that require a closer look.
- I want to make some prints this weekend!
- I want to attend a concert this weekend at which the orchestra (of which my wife is a member) performs a few favorite pieces.
So, with all of this to consider, I’m going to put far less mileage on my car this weekend – though I may just make up for it the following week!

… sometimes fail. :-)
A number of things needed to fall into place today so that I could arrive at Cathedral Lakes in the Yosemite back-country this evening to meet a group of photographers. Reading the previous sentence you might think that I’m somehow posting from my tent after enjoying a nice backpacker dinner.
Not quite.
I teach. Classes started this week. Today I met my Friday-only class for the first time. My plan was to have everything packed for the weekend last night – check rather late by headlamp – check. To get up at the slightly-later hour and load the car for the trip – check. To leave for the college with enough time to stop for gas, get ready for my class, etc. – oops!
When I went to the car – after loading it, of course – I discovered a flat tire. By this time it was too late to deal with a repair and still make it to the college on time – I didn’t even have time to unload the car – so I simply had to take the other car, teach my class, and then come home to unpack and get the tire repaired. So, I’m not at Cathedral Lake tonight… where I’m sure it is quite beautiful and my friends are now enjoying the post-evening photography conversation.
At least I’m reasonably confident that the Sierra will still be there when I do make it up to Cathedral… soon.

Tomorrow morning I plan to be at Muir Woods very early to follow up on some of the photography I did there last weekend. After that I may make a brief visit to San Francisco to see my son, or I may shoot some coastal stuff near Muir Woods. Sometime in the mid-afternoon I’ll head over to Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo for a round of night photography with the folks from The Nocturnes.
All in all, a great opportunity to explore the capabilities of the new camera body.
