Trees, much less groves or forests, are a bit of a rarity in the Scottish Highlands, at least compared to what we might expect in similarly rural mountain country in the Western United States. Much of the highlands landscape is devoid of trees, and when they appear they are scatted in small groups… or part of tree farms. So it was a very pleasant surprise to arrive on the coast near Applecross and see these lush, green trees next to the River Applecross.
The small village of Applecross was our destination on this day’s drive. We started in Ullapool, an dour route took us the past lochs, along areas of the ocean coast, then inland though highlands terrain — mostly open country lined with high peaks, a few with fresh snow on their summits. Eventually we reached the western coast and turned south toward Applecross, following a route that gave us long views to islands, including distant Skye.
