California Buckeye, Morning Fog. Calero Hills, California. April 18, 2009. © Copyright G Dan Mitchell – all rights reserved.
Weak sunlight filters through fog to illuminate a solitary California buckeye tree.
Since the peak of the “impossibly green season” is happening right about now here in Central California, I started this weekend by visiting two of the oak/grassland parks very close to my home. This photograph was made as I started a short hike at Calero County Park, an area of open grassland and oaks spread across rolling hills. It was very foggy when I started out but soon the sun began to break up the fog. In this photograph the fog was beginning to thin and the buckeye tree is lit by soft filtered light coming through the fog.

Hi Dan,
I have been asked to collect photos of California Buckeyes for a photo project. Your amazing photo of a buckeye in the morning fog would be great, I think.
Do you sell some sort of rights to use your photography? If you can advise to the process/cost involved, that would be great!
Thanks so much,

Hey, this site just informed me that my comment is a duplicate of one already sent! This may not go through……….
Great shot Dan. I love following your blog… I’m from Mariposa, but have been transplanted out here in Colorado for 16 years now. I do make it home but not frequently enough. So I really enjoy your California imagery–it brings a little bit of home my way. Have you been up along Highway 140 between Merced and Mariposa, just into the rolling foothills near the Old Highway? They should be really green right now with plenty of old Oaks and barns to shoot. I’d love to make it out there this time of the year sometime. I think you’d enjoy that area too. Your image above reminds me of that area. Again, nice work! – greggl
Hey, thanks for stopping by and thanks for your kind words about my photography! I know the area you describe, and I love that sort of Sierra foothill oak/grassland area. I have not yet made it out there at the right moment to shoot the spring green and wildflowers, but I’ll do it eventually. (I’ve shot similar stuff along highway 88.)
