After the Storm, Mt. Gibbs

I have learned that sometimes the light arrives when you don’t expect it. The day had unexpectedly turned stormy, and to my surprise it rained for hours, continuing past the time when Sierra afternoon thunderstorms typically dissipate. I wondered if it would clear at all, but I headed into the Tuolumne area anyway, thinking that I’d surely want to be there if the light did arrive. And it did! Right around sunset the clouds to the west thinned and beams of light played across the landscape.

One of the biggest surprises when I entered the park late on this afternoon was that a significant hail storm had apparently moved through earlier, dropping so much hail that from a distance it looked like fresh snowfall on Mt. Gibbs.

There is enough of a story behind this photograph that I will eventually post an article about it in my “A Photograph Exposed” series. It involved an afternoon and evening of heavy rain, a subsequent morning of fog and mist, moisture-enhanced colors, and a subject that I have almost intentionally chosen not to photograph much at all for decades. It is, obviously, a scene where a forest meets a wet meadow, photographed on a morning when fog drifted from that meadow and through the trees.

I was up early — likely around 4:00AM — since I suspected that there might be fog and mist on this morning after heavy rain. As I drove over a pass to get here there were piles of hail everywhere from the previous evening’s storm. Soon I came to a familiar small lake — the one that I almost never photograph — and I saw fog rising from the lake and drifting into the trees.

After the Rain

This photograph evokes memories of a whole range of sensory experiences in the Sierra. Some are specific to the time and place where the photograph was made, but others are more generalized. There’s something compelling about backcountry rain and the experience of its passage. We think of the Sierra as the “range of light,” but a storm changes everything — the light, the colors, the air, the smells, and even the sound.

This time it had rained since the previous afternoon, hard enough to keep us in our tents and away from photography. Shortly after midday it slowed to a light drizzle, and we were able to escape the tents and head out with camera gear. Nearby was an outcropping where the rocks where still shiny with rain, and in the distance post-rain fog was drifting among the peaks.

Patty and I had a plan to visit a Bay Area garden where she often photographs spring flowers. According to the calendar, it was time for the tulips and other flowers to be at peak bloom. But as the day approached, it was clear that there was a chance of rain which, to say the least, can make this sort of photography challenging. We headed there early in the morning anyway, and it rained on us during the drive. The clouds were still thick when we arrived. Things were looking a bit uncertain.

But what had looked like deal-breaker weather actually turned out to be nearly perfect. The rain stopped, and we had intermittent sunshine and clouds — all kinds of interesting light. And while the rain ended, there was water everywhere, including on these colorful tulip blooms.
