Even though we had almost a week in Paris this past summer, there was simply too much to see — not that this was a surprise! We knew that there were certain things that we simply had to see, and we knew that we wanted to visit several museums, some small and some large. We visit a small photography museum one day, and we visited a portion of the Louvre on another, but there were other things to see and do as well.

All of this is to explain our unfortunately brief visit to Musée d’Orsay, which we only managed to get to near the end of our trip, and then on an afternoon when the place was only going to be open a few more hours. We went in and rushed to see at least a few things that we knew we did not want to miss, and I found time to make just a few photographs, including this one of the airy interior of the building just before it closed.

On this lovely, clouded day of light rain and muted colors, we traveled to the Socrates Sculpture Park along the East River, across the water from Manhattan. Our daughter-in-law  Lia Lowenthal has a piece installed at the park that we wanted to get to see. I had not visited this place before, and it is quite an interesting site — partly because of its shoreline location, partly because it provides an interesting juxtaposition of urban and natural, partly because there is an active sculpture studio next door, and partly because of the works installed there.

After looking at the art I began to look at the environment with photography in mind. I saw this woman sitting on a piece of sculpture in the middle of this worn looking lawn, with the upper Manhattan skyline across the water, and everything in this soft, flat light — and I thought it made a photograph.

Afternoon light from nearby windows on an escalator, the Louvre

We spent the better part of a day during our recent Paris visit at the Louvre. Anyone who has been there knows that a day is far from sufficient time to really see the place and the art that is housed there. We managed one full floor of one (of three) wings and a bit of one or two other areas. Clearly we have no choice but to return to Paris!

It is no secret that I, like lots of other photographs, am entranced by geometric shapes, effects of light, angles, and juxtapositions. Sometimes there is time to see these things and carefully consider how best to photograph them, but sometimes we don’t have the luxury. In this case, I had very little time, as the view is from a moving escalator! Fortunately, I had my camera in hand as we rode down to a lower level, so I was able to quickly raise the camera and make a few quick exposures of this view as it evolved and rolled past.

Several days into our recent visit to Paris we finally made our way to the Le Marais district, partly because it had been recommended (by our oldest son and others) and partly because we wanted to visit a photography museum found in the area, Maison Européenne de la Photographie. The area proved to be very interesting and to be a wonderful place to photograph.

It now is, from what I could see and what I’ve read, a rather “trendy” place — lots of shops and restaurants and so forth. But it also has a history, and I understand that it managed to escape some of the modernization of Paris that took place since the 1800s, including a proposal to raze the area and even to put a major thoroughfare there. These things didn’t happen, so now there are beautiful old (sometimes very old) buildings along narrow and twisting streets. As in almost every place that visitors go in Paris, there are people selling things on the streets. Most of the products are cheap trinkets, but here it was sidewalk art, and I photographed the display while the artist/vendor was elsewhere for a few moments.
