Hillside Aspen Grove

Colorful autumn aspen trees ascend a hillside in Bishop Canyon, California

I love to photograph aspens in soft light, either very early in the morning or in the evening, when the trees are in shadow. This light enhances the colors of the trees and it fills in the shadows, creating an appearance that does not have the stark quality sometimes seen in midday sunlight aspen groves. I waited until the last hour or so of daylight to photograph this area, at which time the sun has already dropped behind the summits of the surrounding peaks.

This photograph takes in a small section of a much larger grove of colorful trees, at every stage from fully green to complete bare. I sometimes like to simply stand for a bit in front of such a grove, staring at the colors and patterns and trying to find small sections that might make a composition. Here I think I was first attracted to the bright leaves on the small trees near the top, but soon I saw the diagonal arrangement of the rows of trees. Each row has its own character. That primary row near the upper part of the frame is at its color peak, but in front of it there is another row of trees that seems to be going more quickly from green to bare. In the background there is a line of much larger trees, with their tall and straight white trunks.

Autumn Haze, Sabrina Basin

Aspen colors scattered across the rugged granite landscape of Sabrina Basin

This particular view may be a familiar one to many who follow the autumn aspen color in the eastern Sierra Nevada, as Sabrina Basin and, more broadly, the Bishop Creek area, is well-known for extensive groves of aspens. This photograph comes from a point just a bit earlier in the color transition season than most of my photographs of the area, and a close look at some of the more distant ridges reveals extensive color among the smaller, high elevation aspens that typically change colors first. The foreground trees were also more colorful than usual for this late September date, though the afternoon backlight emphasizes the effect.

The Sierra present many different appearances, ranging from gentle meadows full of green grasses and flowing water to the most rugged, spare alpine regions filled with rocks and the hard edges of ridge lines. While an up close view of certain parts of this scene — perhaps from standing within one of the colorful aspen groves in the foreground — would present more of the gentle view, the panorama from this high, exposed location reveals the tremendous world of rugged granite in this part of the range, where the Sierra crest rises quite quickly from the high desert terrain to the east.

Snow Flurries, Bishop Creek

Light autumn snow falls on peaks above aspen groves along the South Fork of Bishop Creek

This is a photograph from a wonderful, short trip into the eastern Sierra about five years ago. I believe that I made two trips to the “east side” that fall to photograph aspens, and on this one (the first of the two) I had a couple of days of winter-like weather with clouds and snow. This could put a damper on photography… unless you share my fascination with “interesting” weather, in which case it seems like that best thing that could happen.

I came back from this trip with some very special photographs, mostly because I ran into conditions that were not quite so typical for Sierra autumn. The most typical Sierra day at this time of year starts cold but then becomes warm and sunny with the beautiful autumn light. I love those days, but I’ve seen enough of them to like some variety, too. And that’s what I got on this trip. On one morning it was so cloudy up high that I decided to drive down out of the range and shoot back up towards in the broken light of a stormy dawn. On this day I headed back up toward the high country and photographed aspen color against a backdrop of mountain peaks disappearing into snow showers.

The Last Leaves

The last autumn aspen leaves hang from the branches of nearly bare trees against a granite cliff

So many aspen photographs focus on the wild autumn colors — for good reason! But this is not the only interesting phase of the autumn transition, and I also like the reappearance of the bare, white trunks of the trees as the leaves drop away.

I made this photograph late in the day and in a canyon area where little light penetrates after mid-afternoon, and where trees grow right up against a jumbled granite cliff that is fractured and full of blocks and angles. Late in the day, when the only light comes from the blue sky overhead, the quality of the light becomes quite cold. (At this time of year the air also becomes cold quickly late in the day!) I stuck around after most others had left and photographed these nearly bare trunks into the blue hour period.
