New spring growth comes to life in a waterlogged meadow along the Dana fork of the Tuolumne River beneath snow-dusted summits of Mounts Dana and Gibbs, Yosemite National Park, California.

I think I shot this scene as much for reasons of recording nature as for any aesthetic reasons. It is a bit unusual for me to get to Tuolumne so early in the season – though it isn’t the first time, and I’ve even been there when snow was still on the ground – so I thought it was interesting to catch this meadow while it was still completely waterlogged from spring runoff and before the more familiar lush green growth of the high season had appeared.

First morning light shines across the face of Mt. Gibbs above Tioga Pass, Yosemite National Park, California.

This photograph was made in the early morning alongside Tioga Meadow, the large meadow just below Tioga Pass inside the eastern boundary of Yosemite National Park, as the first sun crept over the Sierra crest and began to hit the upper slopes of Mt. Gibbs. This is one of my favorite locations along Tioga Pass Road, probably because it is the highest area right at the pass but also because of the extensive rolling meadows containing the skeletons of trees knocked down by avalanches and because of the proximity to much higher peaks, such as Mt. Dana.

An elephant seal on a sunny afternoon on the beach at the Piedras Blanca Elephant Seal rookery along the Central California coast.

Early in the extended Fourth of July weekend we travelled down the Big Sur coastline (sorry, only a few photos of that) and stopped at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal rookery on the shoreline in the general vicinity of Hearst Castle. The rookery is quite amazing. Literally within yards of the highway a large group of elephant seals come ashore to do their “elephant seal thing,” and you can view them from a short distance away. (They come ashore in many other places in California but few are this accessible and many are almost completely inaccessible.) During our brief stop I had a great opportunity to put the long lens to use. This seal was, like many of the others, seemingly enjoying a nap on the warm sand in the afternoon sun.

An aspen grove and grassy meadow in Lee Vining Canyon come to life in late spring.

I often visit this little aspen grove in Lee Vining Canyon when I head to the “east side” to photograph Sierra Nevada fall colors in early October. On this trip in early June I camped at nearby Aspen campground and rose very early to photograph dawn light at the South Tufa area of Mono Lake, after which I headed back into Lee Vining to grab a coffee at Latte Da before heading back up Lee Vining Canyon to break my camp. Just before the campground as I passed this spot I noticed the there was a diffused glowing light coming from across the canyon and that no direct sun was yet hitting the grove – and just before the sun rose over the canyon walls and lit up the scene I managed to make a few photographs of this spring version of the scene.
