Chicago’s Cloud Gate reflecting the city skyline

The Cloud Gate sculpture is one of the iconic sights of downtown Chicago, visited by many people and photographed by almost all of them! It stands in an accessible and central section of the lakeside Millennium Park, just across the street from central downtown areas. We wandered past twice on two different days as we walked around this area during our visit. (There are other fascinating public art installations in the surrounding area, too.)

The sculpture is impressive in photographs, but I did not realize how large it is in person. It is remarkable in a number of ways, not the least of which is the effect it has had on the public consciousness. In a purely objective sense, the existence of such a huge, unbroken and curving reflective surface is a marvel. And it is also, to be plain, a lot of fun — it is hard to imagine how anyone could resist playing around with the distorted reflections it produces. Having seen so many photographs of the thing I first resisted the temptation to shoot it, instead just looking. Then I thought that it might be interesting to photograph the ways that people interact with the sculpture, so I took the camera out and started shooting.

Clouds of steam rise into the winter morning sky above Manhattan

It must have been a slow week in Manhattan. When we arrived at our Canal Street hotel on Christmas Eve day, they upgraded us to a better room and put us something like 20 floors up, in a room with huge windows with a view to the east over lower Manhattan. A week later, on the final morning of our visit, we were enjoying this view one last time before checking out and starting the process of heading back to the west coast. (First a few hours in Brooklyn, then a trip to JFK, then a long flight…) It was a cold early morning, not too long after sunrise, and there was a high shield of thin cloud to the east. The sun was coming in under these clouds at a low angle and back-lighting the rising columns of steam all over the city, so we made a few final Manhattan photographs through the window before heading out.

Looking up Madison Street from the Manhattan Bridge, New York City

At least I think this is Madison Street, as best as I can tell by looking at maps now that I am back in California. We were up on the Manhattan Bridge when I made this photograph, high above the street level as the bridge crosses over the east shore of Manhattan. We had walked over from Brooklyn, sharing the bridge with the noisy trains and looking at the extensive graffiti on rooftops.

Our hotel was more or less on the other side of China Town on Canal Street, and we had been into that area several times, starting with a visit to a Chinese restaurant where we joined a big group of family and friends on the evening that we arrived from California. But we had not been all the way through the area to the east shoreline. The Manhattan Bridge provides some very interesting views down into this section of Manhattan. Before this point we had passed next to and above the graffiti covered rooftops that I mentioned above. Here we could look directly down on this street and up toward its end point some blocks in the distance.

Walking down a narrow street in Old Heidelberg, Germany

Patty, waiting for me – yet again! – as I make photographs on narrow back-streets in the area of the Heidelberg old town and the University. Yes, we did walk the busy and commercial Hauptstrasse, too, but more often I recall that we moved over a few blocks and walked up these very narrow and much less crowded streets.

Not only is Patty in this photograph – carrying her bag of camera gear and ready to shoot! – but a bunch of other members of her family comprise the group walking down the small street beyond. I think they eventually just gave up on waiting for us when we stopped to photograph!
