“Table and Chairs” — A table and chairs under a portico in Santiago de Compostela.

One of the pleasures of (warm-weather) travel in many parts of Europe is sitting at an outdoor table to have a drink or a coffee and watch the world go by. The table and chairs were ideally situated beneath the arch of a portico, perfect for that kind of activity along a narrow street in Santiago de Compostela.

The table was empty, but my photo archive suggests that this was not the case for long. The next photographs in my collection are a series of images of espresso cups and spoons… strongly suggesting that we must have ordered coffee, taken seats at the table, and engaged in precisely that activity.

Curving Portico
“Curving Portico” — Light spills into a curving portico and walkway in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

I can’t quite put my finger on precisely what it is, but the town of Santiago de Compostela, Spain has a different feeling than many others of about the same size. There are tourists, of course — but many of the visitors are completing a long camino. You’ll see lots of people carrying backpacks, and not the usual traveler’s carry-on luggage packs. Aside from the Cathedral and its large square, the scale of the place fells a bit smaller and more intimate.

In a few areas there are portico-covered walkways. Most streets do not have them, but where they exist they provide welcome shade and escape from the weather. I photographed this example, with lovely soft light shining between the pillars, during a moment when it was completely deserted.

Cathedral and Dark Sky
“Cathedral and Dark Sky” — The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela on an evening of dramatic light and clouds.

The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is a remarkable structure, with its intricate towers looming over Obradoiro Square. This is the end point for walkers “doing a camino” from locations in France, Spain, and Portugal. You can watch them arrive and imagine what it must be like to finally reach this point after weeks or more than a month of walking.

Every so often conditions produce some remarkable light — this was one of those times. It had been cloudy, and the sky was still dark with just a hint of sunset color. But far to the west the cloud shield ended and a beam of warm evening light fell on the cathedral, highlighting it against that dark and dramatic sky.

“Achat de Chevaux” — A mosaic featuring the image of a red horse on an old Paris shop.

As usual, I made the photo while thinking of it purely as a visual object, and only later did I stop to wonder about what it meant and why it might be there. I’m still a little bit confused about it. Some poking around on the internet offered a couple of translations of the words. They are literally, as I understand it, “purchase of horse.” One writer suggests that it might mean that a former business purchased horses. A complicating factor is that at least one previous business here was a butcher shop.

As to the visual quality of the object, the brilliant red colors certainly got my attention, as did the form of the horse on its two hind legs. Even more, whoever made this attention-grabbing sign did so in a truly old school manner. It is a complex and fascinating mosaic, and the entire front and side of the building are also covered in more abstract mosaic tile designs.
