Woman in Red Coat, Paris
“Woman in Red Coat” — A woman in a red coat sits on steps outside a Paris building.

This is another of the “grab shots” that I often come away with when I’m doing street photography. Here things appear and disappear quickly, and it is often more a matter of grab-that-shot than careful and slow consideration of the subject. Here I simply spotted this women on the steps and wearing the striking red coat as we walked past.

It can sometimes be hard to articulate precisely what I see in a photograph that I make. Here, I think that the color of the woman’s red coat is pretty important, as it stands out against the cooler colors in the rest of the scene, especially the color blue. I also was attracted to the somewhat melancholy feeling of the woman sitting alone on the steps in front of the badly weathered doorway. Form is also important, and here the mirrored shapes of the planter boxes create a kind of background rhythm.

“Eingang” — Elaborately carved church door, Munich.

The small “EINGANG” or “entrance” sign directs visitors toward the main entrance of the Frauenkirche in Munich. As I was looking for more information on the church I searched on photos and found only one that might have included a detail from this entryway — all of the others are of the main entrance. Suffice it to say that these doors don’t get that much attention and they deserve more.

The church is a landmark location in Munich. Although these doors don’t appear to be used that much, the carving work on them is quite impressive. The church’s two tall towers are visible from a great distance. Unlike many European church towers that that I’ve seen, these are topped with rounded domes rather than spires.

Ma Maison en Alsace
“Ma Maison en Alsace” — An old building in the quaint Alsatian town of Eguisheim.

I have written before that our “home base” in Europe is Heidelberg, where relatives live. (Hi Greg and Jan, and others!) We were based there for the first three weeks of our late 2024 trip — we traveled out to Nürnberg, Munich, and the Alsace region of France. This photograph comes form the latter adventure. This building is in the little Alsatian town of Eguisheim, where there are a lot of these old school structures.

I don’t count myself as an expert on Equisheim or Alsace, but this town is apparently known for its circular form (based on very old protective walls) and for maintaining a whole lot of these old buildings. Most have, of course, been fixed up — and some turned into shops and lodging — but many of them lean in charming and occasionally alarming ways.

“Souvenir Store, Lisbon” — The entrance to a small souvenir store on a backstreet in Lisbon.

I am realizing that I have lots of photographs of these shops in Lisbon — perhaps a series of photographs is in order at some point. We saw many of them on walks from our lodgings in the city. We weren’t too far from the train station, which meant that we were in an area where a lot of things come together — main streets, transportation, business and shopping areas, tourist stuff, neighborhoods, restaurants, with narrow streets packed with people, and these little shops.

If I can generalize, there’s a kind of continuum (and not just in Portugal) that runs form fancy, upscale shopping areas to tiny, improvised, shops like this one. We didn’t go inside, as we were passing by on our way somewhere else, but this distinctly non-fancy shop seemed to sell a little bit of everything, with the tourist-attracting knick-knacks out front.
