Hostas leaves growing in a Portland, Oregon garden.

I made this small series of photographs of the leaves of hostas plants while wandering around the extensive rose gardens at Portland, Oregon’s Washington Park. I’m not a big fan of photographing roses – though I’m fascinated by looking at them – so I had not made any photographs while visiting that primary area of the garden, but once we began to poke around in some of the peripheral gardens that featured other kinds of plants I started to see things that attracted my own photographic interest more strongly. This set of leaves was in a large bed of hostas plants along a walkway and in the shade, and I thought that the colors and textures of their overlapping leaves created some very interesting patterns.

Trillium Flowers, Redwood Forest

Trillium flowers bloom beneath the redwood forest, Northern California.

This is another in what is likely to be a series of photographs of trillium blooms in the redwood forest just north of San Francisco. On this morning I arrived before the crowds that often come across the Golden Gate to visit this nearby forest, and I walked into the redwood groves while there was still a relatively small number of people. Despite this being a very dry winter, some recent rains had moistened things up a bit and there was a fair amount of water around – and it almost seemed like plants that had been waiting for water were now making up for lost time.

At first I didn’t see too many trillium plants or flowers, but as I walked I began to come across more of them. A hike on a side-trail that traversed a hillside brought me to many more flowers, and in a few places they were thick enough and close enough together that I could include groups of them in the frame. Here I put on a very wide angle lens, and shot from a very close distance at a large aperture so that I could include this row of flowers and throw the background of the forest floor out of focus.

Red Wing Blackbird, Fence Post

A redwing blackbird pauses atop a fence post in front of central California oak/grassland, Calero County Park.

Photographed on the same morning as another recent shot of this same type of bird, the bright red upper wings of this redwind blackbird provide a striking contrast to its jet black body. This bird was on a fence surrounding an old manmade pond at the Calero County Park south of San Jose, California – a place that I can drive to in little more than 15 minutes, and where I have hiked extensively for a number of years. These birds often flock around this small lake on winter and early spring mornings. Here it was still overcast, though the low fog from earlier in the morning was now dispersing.
