For fun, today I’m also sharing a little shot of part of my computer screen. It shows several of the threads I’m working on right now. I’m getting close, most likely, to the end of this year’s Eastern Sierra autumn color photographs. (Though western Sierra photography is up and coming right about now.) I’m plunging back into the huge collection of photographs I made as we traveled this past summer — on the screen there are currently photographs from Amsterdam, Paris, Vienna, and Heidelberg, with a few other locations yet to come.

But I’m not just working on new photographs — some older work is also on my mind this week. I am a member of a San Francisco night photography collective known as Studio Nocturne. We have a small show right now at Farley’s Coffee in San Francisco, each of us has a piece in the SOMArts exhibit, and our San Francisco ArtSpan 2018 Open Studio is next week at ARCH Supplies in San Francisco. This means printing and mounting and labeling various pieces, including the dark photograph of a Central California donut shop at the top of this window.

And there’s more! I’m also working on a number of prints for Stellar Gallery in the Yosemite Area — some for a new exhibit that is just going up there and some to be sent to collectors who have made recent purchases. No, those aren’t on the screen at the moment… but they will be very soon!

Before I say much about this photograph, a bit of background. Near the start of August 2018 we departed from California’s West Coast on a trip that would last forty days. We started with a brief visit to New York City, followed by another brief visit to London — both great places to visit and to adapt more slowly to the time zone changes. From there we made a rough loop that took us to Amsterdam, Berlin, Nuremberg (briefly!), Bayreuth (site of the famous Wagner festival), Heidelberg (for rest and recuperation… and laundry!), Vienna, Paris, and then a week outside of Paris near Barbizon with family. Whew! It was a great trip, with a few familiar places and some that were new to us. Along the way we had lots of opportunities to make photographs, and I’ll be starting to share some of them over the next few weeks and months.

We had three full days (four nights) in Berlin, a city that neither of us had visited before. We don’t travel with tour groups, so we were mostly on our own to explore, and most of our exploring was done on foot. On our last full day we headed east from where we were staying, eventually making our way to the “East Side Gallery.” This is a large section of the Berlin Wall that was not knocked down, but instead turned into a vast canvas for artists. My approach to photographing such a thing isn’t precisely to photograph the art itself, but instead to try to place it in its surroundings and/or photograph people interacting with it — which is the case with this man dressed in red who walked in front of this red section of the former “red” wall.

“Transitions: Winter Into Spring” — Yosemite Exhibit

This is a reminder that “Transitions: Winter Into Spring — Photographs by Yosemite Renaissance Artist-In-Residence G Dan Mitchell and Friends” continues though this month at Gallery 5 in Oakhurst, on the southern border of Yosemite National Park.

In addition to more than a dozen of my photographs, the show includes prints from a talented group of photographic artists and friends that I invited to collaborate on the project: Jerry Bosworth, Franka Mlikota Gabler, Charlotte Hamilton Gibb, David Hoffman, Vidya Kane, and Kerby Smith.

From the Yosemite Renaissance website:

Over the past two months,  artist in residence G Dan Mitchell has been photographing Yosemite during the transition from winter into spring.  It is an unpredictable time, rich in imagery for photographers as late winter storms challenge the new growth of spring.  Wildflowers appear first, poppies and many others.  Dogwoods come next, encouraged by warming temperatures and clearing snow.  At the same time temperatures suddenly drop and snow falls in unpredictable ways. Daffodils and irises are suddenly covered in snow.  G Dan and six other photographers have done their best to capture this magical time in and around Yosemite.  The show will include over 40 works documenting the transition.  Proceeds from the exhibit will benefit Yosemite Renaissance. For today’s photographer we are back to Manhattan, with a photograph from our recent end-of-December week in New York. I always go into street photographer mode (with essence of travel photographer sprinkled in, as well) when we visit there — which we get to do relatively frequently since two sons live in Brooklyn. The street wandering on this trip was a bit more of a challenge than usual, as we were there during a rather extreme bout of very cold weather that taxed this coastal Californian’s ability to stay warm. Our routine often became one of walking and photographing until we were too cold to continue, stopping in a warm place for coffee or food, and then heading out again.

I think I made this photograph in Soho, as we walked north from near the southern tip of Manhattan. I’m pretty certain that the lighting on these group first caught my attention. (This was the trip on which I finally realized that the light in Manhattan is as interesting as that almost anywhere else, including a lot of places that are otherwise not at all like New York City.) The arrangement of the members of the group also caught my attention — the one woman (the subject of the photograph they are making) standing apart and with her back to me and being hit by the light just a bit, the fellow with the camera trained on her, a woman seated next to him looking on closely, and the woman apart on the left and in darker clothes, who is smoking and doesn’t seem all that involved. The light shines obliquely across the scene from the left, catching both the people and the scene in front of the building.
