My timing was fortuitous on this morning. The white pelicans usually congrats in groups that appear to contain a few dozen individuals. The often stay more or less in one place for long periods of time, but eventually they decide to move. They take off in long strings of individuals, generally flying past not too far off the ground. This happens suddenly, and if I’m not in the right spot, rather than being close enough to photograph them I watch the brief spectacle from a distance. On this day I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time.

I think of the white pelicans as being special. Perhaps most people wouldn’t, being mostly familiar with white versions of the bird. But I had a long acquaintance with the coastal brown pelicans before I ever realized that the white version was found locally. I’m sure they were around, but someone I didn’t notice — today I see them in quiet coastal waters, in inland ponds, and more. But even today, the coastal birds seem familiar and conventional to me, while these white birds still seem a bit exotic.

Inside the tumultuous take-off of a flock of migratory geese

When I first started photographing migratory birds, I was astounded by the sheer numbers of them and how the flocks behave. I still am. While individuals and smaller groups are sometimes spotted, it is the very large flocks that seem the most remarkable. Sometimes they assemble slowly, a few birds at a time, until there are thousands or tens of thousands of birds. Sometimes they disperse the same way. On other occasions whole flocks move at once, and the visual and auditory experience is astonishing when it happens.

This group took off as a group, in response to some stimulus that escaped my attention. This sort of photograph is a “type” among bird photographers — a long lens photograph that tries to get inside the environment of the flock and what appears to be wild tumult as the birds move all at once.

Quite a few years ago, the first migratory birds that caught my interest in the wild were geese. I specifically recall the occasion or, more correctly, two occasions. (They may or may not have occurred on the same trip — I no longer recall for sure.) The first was on the long drive north from the San Francisco Bay Area. I had departed late in the day, planning to get a motel in the southern Oregon and then complete the drive the next day. Far up the Sacramento Valley at sunset and then on into dusk I began to see huge flocks of the birds over this agricultural landscape. I really didn’t understand what I was seeing, but I was impressed and it planted a seed.

Then, perhaps on the same trip or possibly on another Seattle visit at about this time, I drove up to the Skagit Valley area. As I drove I saw the remarkable trumpeter swans that are found there, and eventually I pulled over on a curve near some old buildings by fields. Far off in the distant sky I started to see strings of birds, and a few minutes later snow geese began landing right next to me… and they kept coming, until the entire field was filled with the white birds. You can imagine how impressed I was — I had not seen something like this before! I made the photograph shared here much later and in a different place.

Cranes just might be on my mind this week due to a little snippet on a television program I saw last week. In it a couple of people, a photographer and a wildlife proponent, we sitting along the edge of a watery area in, if memory serves, the state of Nebraska. All it took in this brief clip was the sound of these birds, the site of them in flight and on the ground, and all of the associations with being in their ancient presence came back. If you’ve experienced it, you know — the moist air, the cold, the short winter days, and then the sound and sight of these birds.

There are lots of ways to photograph these birds. I often place them in the landscape, but here I wanted to focus on the birds themselves, as a group of them flew overhead in late-day light. Compared to certain other birds you might see in the same places and at the same times, the cranes have a more “stately” pattern of flight. They takeoff at a relatively low angle, and they often fly horizontally for a good distance before they gain much elevation. In smaller groups they fly beak-to-tail in undulating lines. Their wing motion is slower than that of, say, geese. Oddly, however, for birds that often seem so low-key, there are exceptions. One is the familiar “dance” that they do during mating season, when individuals extend their winds and jump into the air. In addition, I’ve sometimes caught then doing very strange things in flight — sudden twists and turns, beak pointed up toward the sky, and more.
