A pair of legs, a low brick wall, and a sidewalk, London.

As I prepared this photograph for posting I got a tune stuck in my ear — the proverbial ear worm. Sorry for sharing it, but the (slightly modified) lyrics would be: “London legs are falling down, falling down, falling down…” Not sorry enough?

This is another photograph that belongs to the category called, “it might be hard to explain this.” Let’s just call it street photograph, since that’s what it is. I think it is more about geometry than anything else, perhaps.

A building and a reflection in a window.

This is another Portland, Oregon photograph, though there’s not much in it to specifically connect to that city — you could find buildings like this in any number of cities in the US.

My recollection — and it has been a few years — is that I made this photograph by aiming toward the window of a business, most likely a restaurant, and catching the reflection of the building in the windows. But the reflection was still semi-transparent, so the face on the interior display ended up seeming to float across the surface of the building — a sort of “Photoshop in the flesh” effect.

A man walks past a blue San Francisco building in morning sunlight.

Let me start by pointing out that this is not the first time I have shared this photograph. An earlier interpretation of it exists using a different aspect ratio. I came across it again recently as I scanned through my old raw files, and I decided to take another look at it. This time I altered the aspect ratio, retaining the original 3:2, though I more typically work with 4:3. This allowed me to include the decorative rectangles at the upper right and left. In addition, as I thought more about the role of the blue color in this photograph I decided to simply remove a few elements that were dissonant with that.

The scene is a San Francisco street, and I made the photograph on one of my day trips up to “The City” by train, something that was a regular photographic event for me prior to the pandemic. I was walking up into the main downtown area from the train station, pausing along the way to photograph interesting subjects in the full morning sun across the wide street. I had already made a couple of photograph of this very blue building when I saw the man walking into the scene.

This photograph comes from one of my (formerly) frequent long walks through urban San Francisco, which is only a one-hour train ride away from where I live. My practice has been to periodically head up there very early in the day, and then spend the morning walking through various parts of The City with my camera.

This was not one of the “postcards from Pandemic” photographs. In fact, I made it last year before anyone had an inkling of what was coming. (Remember those innocent times?) But it seems to me to have a different context given what has happened in the past few months.
