Leaves and Rain

Leaves and Rain
“Leaves and Rain” — Lush green leaves with raindrops, Stirling Castle garden, Scotland.

We did not go to this location intending to photograph garden leaves, but sometimes opportunities just come up. This May we visited Stirling, Scotland for a few days. The plan was to spend time in a less-visited Scottish location — not just less known to tourists in general but specifically to us! We knew little about the town before visiting, but it turned out to be an enjoyable stop. I made the photograph at Stirling Castle, a site connected to a lot of history in Scotland and United Kingdom. It was a rainy day — this happens in Scotland! — and we found these water-sprinkled leaves in a lovely garden near the castle’s entrance.

It wasn’t my intention when I made the photograph, but in some ways this little picture exemplifies some impressions of Scotland. It is, by and large, a very green place! The closest analog that I have in the United States might be the Pacific Northwest, the more coastal sections of which share this lush quality. It is also, again like the Pacific Northwest, a wet place. We did, in fact, have some lovely and sunny weather, but we also had days of fog, mist, rain, and clouds.

Lamp, Window, Morning Light

Lamp, Window, Morning Light
“Lamp, Window, Morning Light” A lamp on the ledge of a window in a Stirling, Scotland hotel.

This is an opportunistic photograph, made at a moment when photography is not typically my priority. We were staying in Stirling, Scotland for a few days after our Great Glen Way walk, and it turned out that breakfast was included with our room. So instead of heading out to hunt for coffee and breakfast, we just walked down that hallway, took the elevator down a floor, and walked into the dining room. And there on the window sill next to our table was this eye-catching lamp, posing against the window lit by morning light, with the blue sky beyond.

“So,” you may ask,” you say you weren’t thinking about photographing. But you had your camera with you? At breakfast?” Well, not exactly. This is an iPhone photograph. (I’ll bet that you didn’t realize that until now, right?) It turns out that sometimes the iPhone can be used to make things other than selfies. For the photographers out there, I did use the iPhone’s raw mode so that I’d have a bit more latitude in post — as you can imagine, the dynamic range in this scene was pretty large!

Blue Frames

Blue Frames
“Blue Frames” — An old stone building with blue frames around doors and windows, Stirling, Scotland.

The main focus of our visit to Scotland earlier this year was waking the Great Glen Way from Fort William to Inverness, but that hike only took up about a third of our visit. Before the walk we spent several nights adjusting to jet lag, including stays in Glasgow, Oban, and Fort William. After the walk we had a night in Inverness, and multiple nights in Stirling, Glasgow, and Edinburgh… before a bit more than a week in England. Stirling, where I made this photograph, was our first serious non-hiking destination after the walk.

Like so many old towns — and Stirling is very old — the construction materials often reflect what was available locally. Here many of the old buildings are stone — they have been updated for modern tenants, but their appearance is far from contemporary. I love interesting geometry and color, and this juxtaposition of old stone walls with the blue-painted frames around the doors and windows caught my attention. Looking more closely, you may also see the remnants of older openings that have been closed off.
