This is one of the photographs from my three-year project photographing professional classical musicians. As part of the project, which is now in its second year, I have been “embedded” with the Symphony Silicon Valley (the descendent of the former San Jose Symphony). Most of my photography has been during rehearsals, when I can work fairly freely backstage, photographing musicians in ways that they are not usually seen. Most people have a limited familiarity with classical musicians, mostly seeing them from a distance in performances when they are formally attired. One of the goals of the project is to show aspects of their lives and work that are not seen as often – the rehearsals, what goes on backstage, even what they do between rehearsals and concerts.

There is a lot of photograph in this world! I’m fortunate not only to have the cooperation of this wonderful group of musicians (thanks SSV people!) but to be personally very familiar with this world. My training is in the field of music. At one time I played professionally, and at another point I worked as an orchestra stage manager. So I have developed some sensitivity to music and musicians that might be difficult for other photographers to achieve. Many interesting things happen so quickly that you might not even see them if you did not know to look. The work of the conductor is but one example. From instant to instant the conductor’s facial expression changes, sometimes radically, to both respond to and anticipate changes in the music. The position and motion of the hands and, for that matter, the whole body, conveys important but fleeting cues to musicians. I studied conducting a bit at one time, but I think I have learned more about it in the past two years by closely watching and becoming aware of the visual elements of the conductor’s work. Layered on top of that is the basic photographic need to be constantly aware of light, both in the technical and expressive sense, and how to place the subject in a context that “works” visually. This is a very different sort of work that photographing landscapes, but it is equally challenging and rewarding!

This photograph of principal double-bassist Bill Everett practicing backstage at a concert of the Symphony Silicon Valley is among my favorites so far from my three-year project photographing professional classical musicians. During this project I have extensive access to the performers and backstage areas, and I’m attending many rehearsals and concerts – so many and over such a long period that I am able to develop personal relationships with the musicians, find and use interesting little bits of stage lighting that others might miss, and learn to see and photograph elements of the musicians’ work that others might miss.

As I have worked the rehearsal and performance halls I have gradually learned a lot about subtle lighting opportunities in the backstage areas. I know keep an eye out for people who wander into this prime light spots, and when I see them there I quickly take advantage of the opportunity. Bill had, likely with no conscious thought, located himself directly between a backstage work light and essentially cast a vertical spotlight on him and his instrument. I stood nearby with a medium long lens and was able to make several photographs of him as he focused his attention on a bit of music from the performance.

And now, as they say, something entirely different. I am midway into a three-year project that has me photographing classical musicians in San Jose, California – primarily the Symphony Silicon Valley and the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. Symphony Silicon Valley is the direct descendant of the San Jose Symphony, a group that has been described as the longest running symphony orchestra in the western United States. The San Jose Chamber Orchestra is a smaller group that has a reputation for exciting and high quality performances and for promoting new works by living composers.

Since many of my usual photographic subjects are inanimate objects – as we like to say, “Rocks. Trees. Water.” – photographing performing artists is, in many ways, a very big change for me. This work is all about the people and, in fact, the point of the project is to tell the stories of these artists in a more complete way, showing and telling aspects of what they do that are not usually seen by the public and concert-goers. It was a bit of a stretch for me at first, walking around among performing artists and finding ways to see what they do photographically and record what they do and show who they are. However, I may have an advantage or two over some who might try to photograph such subjects. I have a lot of background in music, having taught it at the college level for many years, having been a performer myself at one time, and being married to a fine musician. There is as much music as photography in my life, and for this reason I believe that I am sensitive to aspects of the musical life that might not be apparent to other photographers who don’t have this background. Related to this, I have personal friendships among many in this world, which gives me a bit of an entre that has helped a lot.

I’ll likely share more of this work from time to time – from among the 2000 or more photographs that I have made so far. This photograph was made at a rehearsal of Symphony Silicon Vally in late September, 2013. Here the orchestra is preparing their performance of Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite. (Folks who know the music might even be able to figure out where they are in the work – there is a hint in the photo.) For this shot I photographed from the balcony with a long lens in order to compress the perspective of this part of the stage occupied by some of the orchestra’s low string players.

This is another of the “opera house” photographs made within or from the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco during last summer’s San Francisco Opera performance of Wagner’s “Ring” Cycle. Even though (or perhaps “especially because?”) I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I virtually always have a camera with me when I go to The City – sometimes even for musical performances. Because it was June and the sun was setting late, and because the very long performance that night was to start at 7:00 p.m., there was still plenty of light before the performance to make photographs inside the Opera House and from its windows.

Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, the home of the San Francisco Symphony, is directly across the street from the opera house, and each building’s upper floors provide a good view of the other building. For this photograph I snapped on a longer lens – yes, I’m pathetic enough to show up at an opera performance with more than one lens in my bag! – and was able to compose a tighter image of the curving upper floor windows of Davies Hall.
