White-Faced Ibis

Photographing this and some other birds was a serendipitous event at the end of October. I was on my way from the San Francisco Bay Area to Yosemite to photograph autumn color. Rather than show up during the midday flat light period in the Valley, I decided to detour to a wildlife refuge, just to take a look around. I wasn’t really expecting to see much this early in the season, but I was surprised to find plentiful sandhill cranes, egrets, and white-faced ibises.

At one point I came upon a big flock (or, technically perhaps, two flocks intermingled) of ibises and egrets. Although I had intended my visit to be brief, I ended up spending some serious time photographing this group. The birds were feeding among short wetlands plants near the edge of a large pond in the early morning light.

Autumn Flowers

Autumn Flowers

The fall colors brought me to Yosemite Valley for a few days at the end of October. But autumn there isn’t just abut those colors — everything about the place is different during this season. The Valley seems to slow down and mellow out, and I sense that winter is just around the corner, even on a warm, sunny day like this one.

There’s a lot going on in this photograph, and it was a challenge to incorporate all of these elements. Right in front of the camera we see the golden-brown meadow, dotted with white flowers . The forest begins beyond that, with deciduous trees close to the Merced River and then large groves of conifers. In the distance, we see several of the famous Yosemite Valley granite cliffs, with details muted by haze and bright late-afternoon sun.

Autumn Aspens Leaves and Trunks

I have noted before that many Sierra Nevada aspen trees do not quite correspond to our classic expectations — rather than tall, straight trees we often see shorter, broken and bent aspens. I think this may be a consequence of things like very rocky terrain, lower precipitation, and steep slopes. But the classic trees with straight trunks and tall canopies do exist.

My decision to photograph in this spot was, to some extent, a practical one. Late in the day very strong winds developed. (And they would continue on into the next two days, as well.) Unless you like motion blur — and it has its place — wind and aspen leaf photography don’t mix well. Not only are the leaves (and branches and trunks!) in constant motion, but the wind strips leaves from the trees So I headed to this relatively sheltered spot with bigger trees, found some compositions, and waited for breaks in the gale to make a few photographs.

Forest, Whie Drin River
“Forest, White Drin River” — A person stands next to the White Drin River under a forest canopy, Kosovo.

The White Drin is a branch of the Drin River that drains Kosovo and parts of Albania — this portion begins in the mountains along the western side of Kosovo. Some regard a waterfall a bit further up the river from here as its source. This scene is along the popular walking route to that fall.

While many of my landscape photographs exclude people, it seems appropriate to include one (and more, if you look closely) here. This location, not far from the town of Peja (or Pec) is extremely popular. The place was crowded when we visited, with families walking the route and in places trailside vendors.
