Certain architectural features seem to characterize various cities. In Europe, from what I’ve seen, these include the materials available locally for construction, the types of roofs, and the color scheme. This view of the Alfama neighborhood of Lisbon is a case in point — with mostly white-walled buildings and red-tiled roofs.
Alfama is by no means the only area in Lisbon like this, though the tight spacing of the buildings, the hilly terrain, and the twisting streets characterize this specific neighborhood. But from my vantage point for this photograph near the St. George Castle, I could look in several directions and see these same red tile roofs.
