The impressive, fortress-like mountain is Slioch, one of the Scottish peaks that reaches above 3000′. We passed by after driving south from Ullapool, Scotland, then cutting west toward Torridon and later heading to Applecross, on the coast looking westward toward the Isle of Skye. The route passes all sorts of beautiful country — coastal bays, long valleys, lochs, tall peaks.
We came upon this scene a good distance into the drive. It featured lovely Loch Maree with (somewhat unusual here) many shoreline trees. Rising above the opposite shoreline was a tall and rocky ridge rising toward the peak. Some of the terrain reminded me of the features I find in the glaciated Yosemite high country. Towering above was an even higher ridge, topped by dramatic Slioch, which still held a recent dusting of new snow.
