Gruinard Beach

Gruinard Beach
“Gruinard Beach” — Surf rolls in at Gruinard Beach, Scotland.

We passed this large beach on our way from Ullapool to Applecross, Scotland this past May. We were on a long day trip loop drive out there. I don’t think I really had a good idea of what we’d see or what kinds of country we would pass through, and I was surprised by the many places where our route took us along the ocean coast. This beautiful beach seems to be shallow, with the tides uncovering a wide swath of sand. And, as is so common in this part of Scotland, we could see both the ocean waters and distant high peaks.

Snow-capped Slioch

Snow-capped Slioch
“Snow-capped Slioch” — Trees frame the snow-dusted summit of Slioch.

This photograph is an example of my policy of not knowing too much when I travel. It drives some people (hi, Patty!) crazy, but it does mean that I get to “discover” things before knowing that they are iconic. Almost two months after photographing this “random” impressive Scottish mountain I learned that it is well-known. Apparently, photographs of the peak have been used to represent this area of northern Scotland.

Little Sur River and Beach

Little Sur River and Beach
“Little Sur River and Beach” — The Little Sur River meets the Pacific Ocean on the Big Sur Coast.

I confess to having photographed this scene quite a few times. I live close enough to Big Sur that I can drive down for a morning of photography and be home for a late lunch. This spot, where the Little Sur River flows across Little Sur Beach and into the Pacific Ocean, has always intrigued me. I stop and at least take a look almost every time I am down there.

Slioch and Loch Maree

Lakeshore and Mountain
“Slioch and Loch Maree” — Snow-dusted peak of Slioch towers above Loch Maree.

The impressive, fortress-like mountain is Slioch, one of the Scottish peaks that reaches above 3000′. We passed by after driving south from Ullapool, Scotland, then cutting west toward Torridon and later heading to Applecross, on the coast looking westward toward the Isle of Skye. The route passes all sorts of beautiful country — coastal bays, long valleys, lochs, tall peaks.
